River Ribble at Sawley

A proper cracking stretch of the Ribble between Gisburn and Sawley, run by Yorkshire Fly Fishers' Club. It’s nearly three miles of lightly fished, keeper-managed water, with everything from easy-wading gravel pools to steeper wooded and rocky ground.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is a medium-sized river with plenty going on. The lower sections run through pastureland, while the upper ground gets steeper, woodier and rockier.
  • The beat is mainly left-bank fishing, with some right-bank water too. It covers nearly three miles, so there’s a fair bit of river to explore.
  • It’s classic pool-and-riffle stuff over gravel down low. Expect a mix of proper pools, steady glides and lively pocket water higher up.
  • The lower pools are gravel-bottomed and easy to wade, which is bob on for working through trout and grayling water when conditions are favourable.
  • There’s a keeper on the beat to keep an eye on things and help members out. A fishing hut is also provided on the Ribble beat.
  • The club says trout and grayling numbers are generally good when the river is playing ball. Dry fly, wet fly, nymph, streamer, short-line nymph and tenkara are all listed approaches.
  • Migratory fish are a big part of the picture. Salmon and sea-trout are listed, with salmon over 20 lb returned in most seasons and an average of more than 50 salmon reported over the preceding ten years.
  • Much of the beat suits night-time sea-trout fishing. That’s a cheeky option when the daylight game quietens down, although the facts don’t set out a separate night-ticket arrangement.
  • The fishing is described as wild rather than manicured. Paths are cut where needed, but it’s not a manicured park job — more proper riverbank fishing, with the keeper helping keep access sensible.

Methods: There’s a cracking spread of fly options here: dry fly, wet fly, nymph, streamer, short-line nymph and tenkara. Lower gravel pools suit easy wading, while the glides, pools and pocket water give you plenty to pick apart.
