We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is Association-owned fishing run by Warrington Anglers Association, with the fishing on the right bank.
- The beat runs for roughly 1.5 miles through rural Lancashire. Expect uneven walking, ups and downs and a fair bit of legwork between swims.
- There’s a lovely mix of water. Long riffles, deep glides and several impressive pools give you plenty to poke about in.
- Sale Wheel is the notable pool. It’s a big swirling bit of water where bream, roach, dace, pike and even carp have been recorded.
- Brown trout, including good fish, are present in the pools and deeper water. Salmon and sea trout turn up when they’re running.
- A roving, lightweight approach is bob on for the coarse fish. Keep mobile, cover several swims and don’t get bogged down in one spot.
- The deep glides before the fast gorge water are the place to think about trotting. There’s enough depth and flow to make a float go properly.
- Barbel are particularly noted towards the bottom of the stretch below Sale Wheel pool. Look for pace, depth and the crease rather than just the prettiest swim.
- Access is generally on foot from parking areas. Clough Bank Farm gives the main access, but it involves a steep drop to the river and a steep walk back.
- Through House Farm offers a longer but gentler walk, with free parking. Clough Bank Farm parking is chargeable, and vehicles can’t go beyond it. The Ribble Way runs beside much of the bank.
- We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
Methods: Keep it light and roving for the coarse fish, with trotting through the deeper glides and a more patient approach in the bigger pools. For barbel, concentrate on the deeper, quicker water below Sale Wheel.
