River Trent – Girton

Girton is a proper tidal Trent stretch, reached from Trent Lane and run jointly by Newark and District Piscatorial Federation and Scunthorpe Amalgamated Anglers. It’s members-only water, with roughly 600 metres to explore and about 30 pegs.

The lowdown

  • Fishing starts around 100 metres downstream from the fence on the left, then the stretch runs for approximately 600 metres. Plenty of water to get your head around, so don’t just plonk yourself in the first swim.
  • This is tidal Trent fishing, with the river’s flow and level doing the usual tidal-Trent dance. Keep an eye on the water and expect the character of the swim to change as the tide moves.
  • The fishery has approximately 30 pegs. That gives you a decent spread of options, although the federation says information on this water is limited, so a bit of on-the-bank homework is bob on.
  • The federation expects the usual tidal-Trent species here, including barbel and bream. Two proper river targets, and both can put a bend in the rod when conditions line up.
  • For tactics, think along the lines of feeder work and other sensible flowing-water approaches. Barbel and bream will have you watching the crease, the steadier glides and any areas where the flow eases off.
  • A bit of colour and a manageable river level could be well worth fishing. As ever on tidal water, keep the conditions in mind rather than forcing a swim that’s clearly racing through.
  • Night fishing is permitted, but it’s controlled by Scunthorpe Amalgamated Anglers. There’s a separate night season card, and new applications may be restricted to existing permit holders.
  • The fishery is gated. Members of either organisation use their own lock, while new anglers must contact the federation secretary for the new gate-lock code. Don’t turn up and start having a faff with the gate.
  • Access is from Trent Lane at Girton, using the first left after Girton signed ‘Girton village only’. Grass is strictly off-limits for both parking and driving, so stick to the access arrangements.

Methods: Feeder fishing and other flowing-water tactics look the natural starting point here. Pick apart the crease and steadier water, then adjust as the tidal flow changes.
