We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is south-west Lincolnshire’s River Welland, with GAAFFS holding the fishing rights west of Stamford.
- The water is managed mainly for trout and grayling, with wild fish doing most of the work. Brown trout are stocked, but only sparingly.
- It’s natural, challenging and varied rather than a heavily pegged commercial-style run. Exact beat lengths and peg numbers aren’t published.
- GAAFFS has carried out habitat work including riffle weirs, flow deflectors and berms. That should give the river plenty of changing water and interesting features.
- The club says its rivers are uncrowded and unspoilt, so this is one for anglers who like a bit of peace and a proper river feel.
- Fly fishing is required on designated waters. Keep things tidy, fish carefully and return everything alive — trout, grayling and coarse fish must not be killed.
- Catch and release is compulsory. Barbless hooks are required, and GAAFFS asks anglers to keep fish wet and minimise handling.
- The stated trout season runs from 1 April to 29 October. Grayling fishing can extend into February, giving the Welland a longer winter window.
- Access notes include Great Ponton Bridge for some GAAFFS beats, with other Stamford-area notes around Great Ponton and Belton. Display the club parking sticker and carry membership ID.
- Membership is limited to available water, and catch records are needed for renewal. Guest tickets are possible, but only one guest is allowed on an occasion.
Methods: Fly fishing is the game here, with barbless hooks and careful catch and release. Read the varied water, work the likely trout and grayling lies, and keep handling to an absolute minimum.
