River Welland — Four Mile Bar to Spalding Yacht Club
A long, broad and slow-flowing fenland stretch from Four Mile Bar down to Spalding Yacht Club. It’s a heavily weeded Welland venue with big shoals of bream and roach, plus night fishing allowed — proper old-school match water that’s quieter these days.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- The stretch runs downstream from Four Mile Bar to upstream of Welland Yacht Club, taking in a good old chunk of lowland River Welland.
- It’s broad, steady and very fenland-like, with floodplain surroundings rather than dramatic banks. Think open water and a proper slow glide.
- Weed is a big part of the picture here. It can make things awkward, but it also gives the fish cover and feeding areas.
- Large shoals of bream are present, with roach shoals too. When they’re on the munch, there should be plenty of bites to aim for.
- This was historically a well-known match-fishing venue. The association says its popularity has dropped in recent years, so it may feel less pressured than of old.
- Raking may improve your chances by opening up a fishable spot in the weed. Prebaiting is also suggested, especially if you’re settling in for a proper session.
- The natural approach is to work the slower water and fish around the clearer gaps in the weed. Trotting or feeder work should suit the broad, steady character.
- Night fishing is permitted, which gives you another angle on this long stretch. Just make sure your ticket and tackle are sorted before settling in.
- Access is referenced from Four Mile Bar Bridge, PE11 3DY, with the downstream reference upstream of Welland Yacht Club, PE11 3AA. Park considerately and keep gateways clear.
Methods: Raking and prebaiting may improve the fishing. For the actual session, trotting and feeder fishing around clearer gaps in the weed are sensible ways to target the bream and roach.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
