Glan-y-Cafn Beat, River Usk
Glan-y-Cafn is a cracking, roughly two-thirds-of-a-mile Usk beat just upstream of Abergavenny, with mostly double-bank fishing and comparatively easy wading. It’s a handy option for trout by day, with salmon coming properly into play when the river has a bit of water on.

The lowdown
- The setting is a belter, with the Sugar Loaf and Blorenge framing the valley. Proper Welsh river country.
- The bed is mostly gravel, and the wading is comparatively easy for the Usk. That makes it a good shout if you want less faff getting about.
- The water mixes streamy runs, neat glides and bigger salmon pools, so there’s plenty to work through rather than one flat characterless stretch.
- The upper section is best suited to daytime trout fishing. Fly fishing is required for trout, so bring the usual Usk-friendly kit and cover the flowy water properly.
- The island area can fish well during spring olive hatches. Keep an eye on the surface and be ready to switch gears when the naturals show.
- The lower glide comes into its own on spring and summer evenings. It’s a lovely spot for a later session, with evening tickets available from 5pm.
- Salmon are especially worth targeting at medium or high water. Availability is tight, with a maximum of two salmon rods per day, and the owner may retain one rod.
- A 160-metre walkway runs beside one pool, which is useful for access, but part of it is reported to be in disrepair. Take care along it.
- Parking is less than 50 metres from the river. There’s also a public footpath along the opposite bank for much of the fishery, so expect other river users on warm days, weekends and bank holidays.
Methods: Fly fishing is required for trout, with the streamy upper water and spring olive activity around the island worth attention. For salmon, concentrate on the larger pools and stronger water when levels are medium or high.
