Lower Bigsweir — River Wye, Wyeseal Farm to Llandogo

Lower Bigsweir is Newport Angling Association’s members-only Wye water, running above and below Bigsweir Bridge towards Llandogo. Fast shallows, water around eight feet deep and tidal level changes give it a proper mix of river character.

The lowdown

  • First, get the boundaries bob on. The upstream limit sits two fields above Wyeseal Farm, and the downstream end is behind the Sloop Inn at Llandogo. Newport Angling Association leases the stretch.
  • Bigsweir Bridge isn’t the end of the fishing: the fishery extends above and below it. That’s worth keeping straight when planning which part of this Wye water you want to fish.
  • There’s a proper contrast in the water here, from fast shallows to approximately eight feet deep. Don’t picture one uniform run; the published description gives you quite a spread of depth and pace.
  • Tidal fluctuations affect the levels, so this isn’t simply a case of thinking about upstream flow. Keep that changing water level in mind when choosing a swim and setting up for the session.
  • Barbel, chub, dace and pike are the named fish here. Float and feeder fishing are the usual approaches identified for barbel and chub, giving you two straightforward ways to tackle the stretch.
  • This is an autumn-and-winter access window, not an all-year option. Access runs from 18 October to 2 March, including Tump Farm, so get those dates in the diary before sorting a trip.
  • There are parking options on both banks: the Old Station area below the bridge on the right, and grass at the end of Wyeseal Farm track on the left. Display your membership card.
  • Tump Farm also has right-bank parking for a small charge, with no payment attempts before 9am. Keep the bank manners tidy too: leave ten metres between anglers, give salmon anglers priority and take litter home.

Methods: Float or feeder is the named approach for barbel and chub, with fast shallows and deeper water offering contrasting swims. Leave the spinning kit out of the plan — spinning is prohibited.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
