Cut Off Channel

The Cut Off Channel runs from Denver Sluice to Stoke Ferry Aqueduct, with King’s Lynn Angling Association Ltd controlling the fishery. It’s a deep, changeable bit of the Great Ouse drainage system, with roughly 50 purpose-built platforms around Hilgay and some proper bream and tench potential.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is a serious bit of fenland channel, reaching depths of up to 13 feet. Plenty of water to get your head around.
  • The fishery runs through Denver, Hilgay, Wretton and Stoke Ferry. New Stoke Ferry is members-only, so don’t rock up expecting a day ticket there.
  • Hilgay is the match-angling section, with around 50 purpose-built platforms. Bob on if you like a proper peg and a tidy setup.
  • Big bream and tench are often present. Roach were the dominant fish in the association’s 2023 survey, with pike and rudd also recorded.
  • The channel is part of the Great Ouse drainage-channel system and can be affected by large tidal surges. Water levels may change substantially, so keep an eye on conditions.
  • Several sections are described as sheltered from the wind, handy when the fenland breeze starts having a proper go.
  • Predator anglers are well catered for. The association says the channel is popular for fly-fishing predators, and you can move along the banks with minimal tackle.
  • Power lines affect some of the fishing. Stay well clear: fishing is prohibited within 30 metres of them.
  • There are prohibited areas between marked points from Wretton Bridge to School Common Entrance. Bridges, parapets and rails are also out of bounds.
  • Think sensible fish care: a large landing net and forceps are compulsory. Fish can be retained in keepnets for up to 12 hours, but knotted keepnets are banned.

Methods: Match-style float and feeder fishing look the natural fit around the Hilgay platforms, while the deeper water should suit bream, tench and roach approaches. For predators, keep it mobile with minimal tackle and work the banks on the fly.
