River Derwent Sutton upon Derwent
The lowdown
- This is a deep, steady bit of Derwent, with the fishery sitting roughly 1.5 miles above the weir.
- The water above Sutton Bridge is especially deep, so a float around 6–7 BB is described as normal. No messing about with dainty little floats here.
- Late season is the headline time. Fish shoal before spawning, and the winter roach fishing can be exceptional.
- Slider or stick float tactics are the established game. Caster and maggot are the named hook baits for those roach.
- A feeder is also well worth having in the bag, with the facts noting that it can produce good catches.
- The main named fish are roach, chub, perch, pike, barbel and bream, with roach clearly the star of the show.
- There’s a private members’ car park between the road bridge and the water mill, with direct river access for less-mobile anglers. Bob on.
- After parking, a gated public footpath gives access upstream of the bridge. Stick to the recognised paths and keep to the river bank.
- Take care on the approach road. There’s no footway and vehicles can come round the corner quickly. Also, no night fishing on this Sutton stretch.
Methods: Go equipped for deep-water float work, especially slider or stick float fishing with caster and maggot. Keep a feeder outfit handy too, particularly when the river is carrying a bit of colour or the float line isn’t behaving.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
