River Ouse Poppleton

A cracking three-mile day-ticket stretch on the right bank of the Ouse at Nether Poppleton, split into three sections and run by YDAA. It’s varied river fishing, with abundant roach and bream, named hotspots and plenty of room for different approaches.

Run by York District Angling Association (YDAA) · checked 7 Oct 2026

The lowdown

  • This water is a continuation of the Red House fishery, with roughly three miles of fishing available. The three sections vary in width and depth, so there’s a fair bit to explore.
  • The river here is generally deep and slow-flowing, making it a proper all-rounder. It’s the sort of water where a steady search can uncover a cheeky surprise.
  • The Pipe Hole is one of the named hotspots, while the Wires is another. Both are worth keeping in mind when you’re picking a swim.
  • Roach and bream are specifically noted as abundant. The pole can also produce bags of roach and perch over the marginal weed.
  • A groundbait feeder with worm and caster is a recommended line of attack. It’s bob on for working a feed line in the deeper, steadier water.
  • Roach often respond well to a maggot feeder, so that’s another tidy option when the fish are sitting in the flow or showing along the crease.
  • The venue is suitable for all angling methods, and its mix of depths, widths and features means you can switch things up rather than bash away at one plan all day.
  • There are fishing platforms, although disabled access is listed as limited. The fishery is used for matches too, so expect the odd bit of organised action.
  • Access is from Nether Poppleton village. Park on the left before the village memorial, follow the track to the river, then go through the white metal gate and continue upstream.
  • There are no on-site toilets or parking at the fishery itself. The water isn’t listed as gated or locked, but the gate is part of the fishing access route.

Methods: All angling methods are suitable here. Try a groundbait feeder with worm and caster, a maggot feeder for roach, or the pole over marginal weed for roach and perch.
