River Ouse – Nun Monkton (formerly Alice Hawthorne)

Nun Monkton, formerly called Alice Hawthorne, is Leeds and District Amalgamated Society of Anglers’ right-bank stretch of the River Ouse in North Yorkshire. There are two match lengths, with access for yearbook holders and a guest-permit option — not public day-ticket fishing.

Run by Leeds and District Amalgamated Society of Anglers · checked 5 Oct 2026

The lowdown

  • Know this one as Alice Hawthorne? Same stretch, different listing name. The society now calls it Nun Monkton, so that’s the name to look for when sorting your trip to this bit of the Ouse.
  • You’re fishing the right bank here. Keep that bob on when planning your approach: the permission supplied is for that bank, rather than a choice of either side of the river.
  • The pegging is split into two match lengths. Length 1 covers pegs 1–25, while Length 2 takes in pegs 26–50 — a straightforward split when getting your bearings on the bank.
  • Peg 50 is the downstream limit, full stop. Fishing below it is prohibited, so don’t wander farther down looking for a cheeky extra swim beyond the numbered section.
  • Parking is at Sweethills Farm. Approaching Nun Monkton village, turn left before the village and follow the winery signs. Continue through the second farm to reach the car park.
  • An evening session is on the cards: fishing is permitted until 11pm. That’s the stated finish, though, not permission to settle in for an overnight session.
  • This isn’t a turn-up-and-buy-a-day-ticket job. It’s listed for yearbook holders only, with membership running from 1 January to 31 December inclusive and no joining fee.
  • Fancy taking a mate? Members can pay for one guest on three occasions a year, and Nun Monkton isn’t among the stated exclusions. Junior members can’t take guests, and the guest-permit purchase proof needs to come along on the day.

Methods: No stretch-specific methods or depths are given, so there’s no firm steer here towards trotting or feeder fishing. The two numbered match lengths give you the layout, rather than a swim-by-swim tactics guide.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
