We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is club water rather than a turn-up-and-fish day-ticket stretch. Settle Anglers members and their guests have access, with two tickets also possible at the owners’ discretion.
- The fishing is on the right-hand bank looking downstream. The top end starts below Stainforth Packhorse Bridge, roughly 150 metres above Foss Pool.
- Downstream, the stretch joins the club’s Robin Hoods Wood water around 700 metres above the Stone Works. A decent run of Ribble to explore.
- There’s parking for three cars beside the Packhorse Bridge. If those spaces are taken, use the arrivals car park below the restaurant buildings, then walk down the road to the stile by the bridge.
- The Foss Pool and Long Eel are deep and dangerous. Keep well switched on around the water, and don’t use the metal ladder at Foss Pool to land fish.
- Smooth limestone gets properly slippery when wet, so sturdy footwear and a steady approach are bob on. The Foss Pool itself must not be fished under the club safety rule.
- Artificial fly, spinner and worm are listed methods. Shrimp fishing is allowed on the Knight Stainforth Farm waters, while worm anglers must use circle hooks.
- Don’t sit on one pool all day. The club asks anglers to move through when others are waiting, which keeps the fishing fair and avoids a proper queue-up.
- This is farmland water, so dogs are discouraged. Stick to recognised access, look after gates and fences, avoid trespassing and take all litter home.
Methods: Fly, spinner and worm are allowed, with shrimp fishing also permitted on these waters. If you fish worm, circle hooks are compulsory; keep the approach mobile and move through pools when others are waiting.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
