River Swale
Broken Brae
The lowdown
- This is a proper little Swale beat rather than a sprawling stretch, with just pegs 21 and 22 to get your head around. Handy if you like knowing exactly where you stand.
- The river here is fast-flowing and shallow in character. Expect lively water rather than a sleepy canal-style glide, so keep an eye on the flow and fish with care.
- It runs downstream from Brompton-on-Swale Caravan Park, with Brompton Lakes marking the downstream limit. The north bank is the side to head for.
- Flood-erosion protection is visible around Broken Brae in local photography. That gives the stretch a bit of hard-edged river character and is worth noting when looking at the bank.
- The coarse-fishing season runs from 16 June to 14 March. The river is closed to all fishing from 15 March to 24 March, so check the date before setting off.
- There is no night fishing, and RADAS day permits run from 6:00am until 10:00pm on the booked date. That gives you a full daytime session without any late-night faff.
- Free parking is available in the Broken Brae lay-by. Close the gates after access, and leave the dogs, fires, barbecues and litter at home.
- The bait and tackle rules are tight: swim feeders, groundbait and maggots are prohibited. No keep nets either, so this is a careful, fish-and-return job.
- Only single-pointed barbless or nipped-barbed hooks are allowed. Double and treble hooks are banned, no more than two rods can be used, and you must carry a disgorger.
Methods: Fish within the coarse-water rules, keeping things tidy and fish welfare-first. Swim feeders, groundbait and maggots are prohibited, so make sure your chosen approach complies before you settle into a peg.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
