The lowdown

  • This is upper-river Dales water around Hawes, with roughly 15 miles under the association’s control across the Ure and associated becks.
  • The fishing is aimed at wild brown trout and grayling. The association says all its trout and grayling are wild fish.
  • There’s a nice mix of river and beck fishing, so expect varied water rather than one uniform run. Characterful trout and grayling country, basically.
  • Both fly and bait fishing are allowed. Pick your approach around the flow, the depth and whatever the fish are showing on the day.
  • The trout season runs from 25 March to 30 September. Grayling can be fished from 16 June to 14 March, giving the water a useful extra-season option.
  • The river can rise quickly. Wading is only advised when conditions are visibly safe — no heroics needed, especially after a bit of rain.
  • Maggot fishing is prohibited before 15 June, while groundbaiting, fish baits, roe and medicated baits are all prohibited.
  • The association prefers catch and release. Grayling must be returned, while kept fish need to be at least 10 inches long, with no more than two kept in a day.
  • Access and parking points are published at Haylands Bridge, Halfway Houses, Appersett, Kettlewell Lane and Sandy Wheel. Keep gates and field entrances clear, avoid trampling grass and give livestock plenty of space.
  • Each permit covers one rod at a time. Dogs aren’t permitted with anglers on association waters, so leave the four-legged mate at home.

Methods: Fly and bait fishing are both suitable. Fish to the conditions, take care with wading as the river can rise quickly, and keep things tidy around the swims and access points.
