Nutwith stretch of the River Ure
The lowdown
- This is the named Nutwith stretch of the River Ure, rather than the Estate’s separate River Burn water. Nice and clear, then.
- The fishing length runs to 4 miles, giving plenty of river to explore. It’s single-bank water, so access is on one side only.
- The setting is North Yorkshire countryside around Swinton, Masham and Nutwith Cote Wood. Geograph places the western bank near Grewelthorpe.
- Species named by the Estate are salmon, wild brown trout and grayling. That’s the proper Ure mix here.
- The Estate says salmon numbers have increased following river management. It also reports improved water quality over the last 35 years.
- Habitat work has been carried out with Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust. A smolt-release programme has also been undertaken on the river.
- The Estate says juvenile salmon densities at some sites now rival those of leading UK salmon rivers. Encouraging stuff for the river’s salmon fishing.
- Trout fishing isn’t available as a normal online booking. It needs arranging specially with FishPal or directly with Swinton Estate.
- The Estate doesn’t publish a peg count, detailed parking instructions or night-fishing rules. Best to sort those details before travelling.
- Don’t mix this up with the River Burn. That separate Estate water has over 6 miles of double-bank fishing and joins the Ure just south of Masham.
- We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
