Ferry Meadows – River Nene

Ferry Meadows is a cracking Nene venue in Nene Park, with fishable river sections plus the conjoined Overton and Gunwade lakes. It’s nationally known for bream, with proper match weights possible and a few big-ticket predators and carp in the mix.

Run by Peterborough & District Angling Association · checked 6 Oct 2026

The lowdown

  • This is a mixed venue rather than just a river stretch. The River Nene runs into the connected Overton and Gunwade lakes, giving you plenty to get your head around.
  • The lakes are the headline act for bream. The association says match weights over 100 lb are possible, so there’s serious silverfish potential when they’re on the munch.
  • There are 120 numbered swims across Overton and Gunwade. That’s handy for finding a peg, though remember the surrounding park is busy and anglers don’t get preferential rights on the public paths.
  • Overton is easiest from the visitor-centre car park. Gunwade is best reached from the Watersports Centre car park. Both car parks charge, with fees set by Nene Park Trust.
  • The named fish list is a good one: bream, silverfish, tench, pike, zander and carp. The association also reports specimen carp over 40 lb, so don’t turn up without proper kit.
  • For predators, a minimum 30-inch landing net is required, and live freshwater fish are banned as bait. Shop-bought dead bait only. Keep it tidy and fish-friendly.
  • River fishing closes from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. The Ferry Meadows lakes stay open through that close season, giving you a bob-on alternative.
  • Normal fishing hours are one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset. Night fishing is only for anglers with an annual Ferry Meadows night permit, arranged directly with the association.
  • Unhooking mats are required, and every fish must go back alive after recovery. Pleasure anglers can use keepnets only for silverfish up to 2 lb, while bream must be released immediately.

Methods: The lakes look geared to feeder and float work for bream and silverfish, with tench and carp also in the frame. Predator anglers can target pike and zander with shop-bought dead bait, but no live freshwater fish.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
