Plantation River Nene, Barnwell

Plantation is a proper cracking WDNAC stretch near Barnwell, close to Oundle, with around 28 pegs on a sluggish, sheltered River Nene section. It’s picturesque, heavily wooded and capable of producing good bags of quality coarse fish.

Run by Wellingborough & District Nene Angling Club · checked 6 Oct 2026

The lowdown

  • The water is slow and steady rather than a mad pacey river job. Ideal for settling in with a float or feeder and picking apart the swim.
  • Depths are roughly 2.7 to 3 metres at about 10 metres out, while the margins are deepish. There’s enough water close in, so don’t ignore the near bank.
  • Tree cover along the near bank gives the fish plenty of sanctuary. Occasional bushes on the far bank add extra holding spots and useful lines to explore.
  • The stretch is well sheltered and heavily wooded, giving it a natural, tucked-away feel. Proper picturesque stuff, especially when the river is carrying a bit of colour.
  • Bream are a big draw here, with the club indicating fish over 9lb. A feeder approach into the deeper water looks the obvious starting point when they’re on the munch.
  • Tench are also present to over 6lb. In warmer months, try the margins and quieter spots around cover, keeping things tidy and accurate rather than chucking it miles.
  • There’s a good spread of other coarse fish too, including chub over 5lb, perch over 3lb and roach over 1lb. A float can keep you busy when the bigger bream aren’t playing ball.
  • Pike are reported over 15lb, so expect predators to be part of the picture. Take suitable tackle and keep an eye on any signs of baitfish activity.
  • With around 28 pegs, there should be plenty of water to work through, but the trees and bushes mean each swim may fish differently. Look for creases, cover and depth changes rather than forcing one line all day.

Methods: Feeder fishing into the deeper water should suit the bream, while float fishing the margins and cover is a bob-on way to pick up tench, roach, perch and chub. Pike are also present, so predator tactics can come into play.
