Tyne Green Country Park Fishery
Tyne Green Country Park Fishery is a public, council-run stretch on the River Tyne at Hexham. It fishes from the south bank between the old Border Counties Railway Bridge and Hexham Road Bridge, with a wide, quick river and some proper depth to think about.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is urban-riverside Tyne fishing, but it still has plenty going on. You’ve got parkland, bridges, a weir and Hexham close by, so it’s not a wild, remote bit of water.
- The fishable length runs from the remains of the Border Counties Railway Bridge in the west to Hexham Road Bridge in the east. Fishing is from the south bank only.
- The council describes the river here as wide, fast and deep in places. Expect a bit of water to read, especially when the river has colour or extra push.
- There’s a nearby weir with a fish pass built in 2016. That kind of feature can add interest to the flow, but take care around structures and follow the specific Environment Agency rules.
- The surrounding country park covers roughly 19 hectares, with riverside walks, a golf course, play areas and water-sports facilities. It’s a handy spot for a day out, not just a quick cast.
- Brown trout fishing is included in the standard coarse and brown trout day pass. Migratory fish and salmon fishing sit under a separate, higher-priced permit category.
- With fast water and depth in places, sensible river approaches are the order of the day. Think trotting where the flow suits, or a feeder set-up when you need to hold bottom and search the crease.
- Tyne Green is open all year, but the legitimate fishing times, seasons and byelaws still apply. A valid Environment Agency rod licence is needed before buying the council permit.
- Free all-day parking is available at Tyne Green car park, with public toilets nearby. Keep vehicles in marked bays and don’t drive onto the grass.
- Swimming isn’t advised here. The river is wide, fast and deep in places, so keep your wits about you around the banks, bridges and weir.
Methods: A float or trotting approach should suit steadier water, while feeder fishing makes sense when the river is pushing. Pick the crease carefully and keep things tidy around the structures.
