Nottingham (Clifton) — TVA (The Pads)
The Pads at Clifton is a proper natural River Trent stretch run by Trent Valley Angling and managed by the volunteer Holme Pit Action Group. It’s membership-only, with marginal pads, a wall feature and wooded ends that look well worth a poke.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- The stretch starts at the wooded area and runs upstream to the field-boundary fence or hedge. Nice and straightforward, with a bit of variety packed in.
- There are pads tight in, and TVA says carp can be caught close in among them. Don’t automatically launch it miles across the river.
- The wall sits roughly 30 metres out and is also described as a carp area. A cheeky line to explore when the margin isn’t doing the business.
- TVA reports a biggest carp of 29lb from The Pads, with plenty of doubles and twenty-pound fish. Proper target-fish potential there.
- The wooded areas at both ends are easy to overlook, but TVA specifically advises giving them attention. Worth checking the quieter edges.
- Parking is available behind all pegs, though access is via the field-edge track only. Keep the car out of the fields — no faffing about there.
- Vehicle access is from Fox Covert Lane bridleway, off Green Street near Mill Hill Roundabout. There’s no vehicle access from Clifton Village.
- The water has a natural river character, so expect marginal pads, a wall feature and wooded ends rather than a bare, uniform bank.
- Carp are the headline fish here, but TVA also names bream, chub, pike and barbel across its waters. A flexible approach makes sense.
- Members must follow the TVA rules, show their membership book when asked, and shut and lock gates behind them. Dogs need close control or a lead.
Methods: The obvious starting point is close-range carp work in the pads, with the wall about 30 metres out as another key line. Keep an eye on the wooded ends too, and switch things around if the river is on the munch.
