We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is the longest River Trent stretch controlled by Nottingham Anglers Association — plenty of water to explore and a fair bit of walking if you fancy finding your own swim.
  • The fishing runs from Stoke Weir all the way down to Hamms Bridge. That gives you a cracking mix of river character rather than one samey stretch.
  • Below Stoke Weir, expect faster flow. It’s the sort of water where a controlled trot or a well-held feeder can get your bait working nicely.
  • As you move towards Hamms Bridge, the Trent opens out into wider, slower-flowing sections. Ideal when you fancy taking things steadier and picking apart the crease.
  • Roach, large bream and barbel are named as predominant species here, with large carp also present. A proper mixed-river line-up.
  • There are two main access points: Stoke Ferry Lane End and Hamms Bridge. Both have large car parks, but you’ll need an NAA key to get through the car park gates.
  • There’s another access point immediately upstream of Gunthorpe Bridge. Parking there is very limited, so don’t bank on turning up and finding loads of room.
  • Access is tightly controlled because the fishing sits on Crown Estate land. Use only the recognised access points — no sneaking through other gates or climbing fences.
  • The closed season runs from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. Once the season is open, match the approach to the water in front of you: lighter, tidy work in the slower areas and something more robust when the flow kicks on.

Methods: Trotting and feeder work should suit the changing flow, with the slower water around Hamms Bridge offering a steadier approach. Barbel anglers will naturally want to concentrate on the faster water and river features below Stoke Weir.
