River Cherwell, Holywell Meadows
A cracking 1,200-yard meadow stretch on the Cherwell, right in urban Oxford and run by the Abingdon & Oxford Anglers Alliance. It’s a proper walk-in venue, with a quieter autumn and winter feel and plenty of punt traffic in summer.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- The stretch starts at the cycle-path bridge on the right bank in University Parks, then runs roughly 1,200 yards downstream.
- The bottom end is easy enough to identify, with the limit marked by a small ditch. Handy when you’re finding your bearings.
- Access is on foot through St Catharine’s College’s main entrance. Turn left past the private car park, then follow the path through the meadow.
- This is meadow fishing in an urban Oxford setting. A nice contrast, although it’s definitely not a vehicle-to-the-peg sort of place.
- There’s no local parking, so public transport, cycling or walking are the sensible options. Less faff, and much kinder to the area.
- Keep well clear of the playing pitches and follow any requests from college staff. It’s a shared space, so a bit of common sense goes a long way.
- Summer brings numerous punts onto the river, which can make things busy and interrupt a swim. Autumn and winter are described as quieter, so those seasons look the more peaceful bet.
- The holder names roach, dace, chub and bream, with pike and occasional tench also present. Plenty of familiar coarse-fishing faces, then.
- The Alliance requires fish to be returned alive, subject to its stated livebait provisions. A large, well-padded unhooking mat is required for large carp or pike.
- There’s no night fishing available through the listed permit at present, as the separate night coarse-fishing permit is shown as out of stock.
Methods: The checked details don’t specify particular tactics, so choose your approach around the seasonal punt traffic and the quieter autumn and winter conditions. Whatever you do, keep fish welfare and the Alliance rules bob on.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
