River Cherwell — Marston (MKAA reciprocal section)

A cracking stretch of the River Cherwell at Marston, with roughly a mile of natural coarse fishing through meadows, woodland and Oxford’s urban edge. It’s a reciprocal-access water for MKAA season-ticket holders, rather than a normal day-ticket venue.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is a scenic bit of river, with Oxford views, meadows and woodland giving it plenty of character. Proper pleasant surroundings.
  • The section is about one mile long, split around the Marston Ferry Road crossing and the bridge. There’s roughly one meadow below the bridge and three above it on the west bank.
  • West-bank access is from Marston Ferry Link Road, using the cycle track or footpath near the Marston Ferry Road crossing. Keep access tidy and respect gates and vegetation.
  • The east bank has around two meadows upstream of the Victoria Arms pub, then continues downstream towards the park boundary fence opposite Wolfson College.
  • It’s a natural coarse-fishing river, not a stocked commercial fishery. Expect a proper river job: changing depth, flow and a bit of hunting around for the fish.
  • The Cherwell is described here as deepening through this urban-edge section. That should give you some interesting water to pick apart, especially around the crease and steadier glides.
  • The named fish are bream, roach, tench, chub and perch. A tidy mix for float work, feeder fishing and lighter river tactics.
  • Trotting is worth considering where the flow allows, while a feeder can find fish when they’re sitting in the deeper stuff. Keep it mobile rather than camping in one swim all day.
  • There’s plenty of visual interest around the Cherwell Boathouse and opposite University Parks, both in the wider Marston area. A cracking backdrop, but still a fish-first stretch.
  • This is season or reciprocal club access only. Night fishing isn’t allowed, and matches need prior permission, so check your ticket and rules before setting up.

Methods: A float and trotting approach suits the running water, with feeder tactics handy for deeper sections and steadier glides. Keep looking for depth, cover and the crease rather than assuming the fish are everywhere.
