We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is proper old-school middle-Thames water. Slow, deep and steady, rather than a shallow chuck-and-run sort of river.
  • The banks are tree-lined, giving the stretch a snug feel and plenty to pick apart. Expect cover, slack edges and deeper main-channel water.
  • It’s a winter-friendly stretch, which is handy when plenty of other venues are starting to look a bit bleak. The bream, chub and perch keep things interesting.
  • Good bags of bream are reported by the Association, so a feeder or ledgering approach looks a sensible starting point when the fish are sat out in the deeper stuff.
  • Chub are also reported here. Keep an eye on the crease, tree cover and any quieter water tight to the bank.
  • Roach and dace can be caught on float tackle. A light float setup should let you work the margins and search those slower runs properly.
  • Floods aren’t necessarily a write-off. Slack water is available close to the bank, giving you somewhere calmer to fish when the main river is pushing through.
  • The stretch is reached from car parking by a relatively long walk, mainly along public footpaths. Travel light and avoid bringing every bit of kit you own — there’s a fair faff before you’re on the peg.
  • Night fishing is permitted at no extra cost, but the legal river season still runs from 16 June to 15 March inclusive. Check the rules before heading out.

Methods: Ledgering is possibly the favoured method for the deeper middle-Thames water, especially for bream. Float fishing is the bob-on option for working the margins and targeting roach and dace.
