We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is Highworth Angling Club water, covering the river from Buscot Weir through Bloomers Field and St John’s Lock, then through Lechlade to the Roundhouse towards Inglesham.
- It’s a proper open-bank river stretch rather than a tight little pool. The club’s official description gives the broad run of the water, but not a fixed length or peg count.
- Access is controlled, so don’t go wandering off-piste. Only official club access points are allowed, and anglers must keep clear of landowners’ property, crops and livestock.
- There’s no night-time faff here. Fishing runs from sunrise to sunset, with no arriving before sunrise and no packing up after sunset.
- A valid Highworth Angling Club membership or river day ticket is needed before you wet a line. The day ticket is £5 — bob on if you’re after a casual river session.
- The rules are geared around careful fish handling. Everything must be returned safely, and anglers need to leave at least 10 yards between one another.
- Ledger fishing is allowed, but it must use a free-running rig. Fixed, semi-fixed and helicopter rigs are out. Barbless hooks only, with a maximum size 8.
- Fly fishing isn’t permitted, and neither is live baiting. Freshwater species can’t be used as deadbaits, while baitboats, firearms and drones are banned unless the committee gives written permission.
- The club says the river pike season follows Environment Agency laws. Junior anglers under 16 also need to be accompanied by a responsible adult.
Methods: Ledger fishing is permitted with a free-running rig, barbless hooks only and no larger than size 8. Fly fishing, live baiting and freshwater deadbaits are not allowed.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
