River Thames — Appleford, Manor Farm
The lowdown
- This is substantial river fishing, with plenty of width and depth amid pasture. Don’t picture a little stream you can cover in a couple of casts — the holder describes a much bigger bit of water.
- The fishing follows the south bank, from Moor Ditch upstream to within 50 yards of the railway bridge. Those are the boundaries to keep in mind when picking your swim, rather than treating the bridge as the finish.
- The weir pool is included, which gives you a cracking feature to consider. The weir structure itself is private, though, so pool access isn’t an invitation to get onto the structure.
- Flow differs between the two ends of the fishery. That’s worth thinking about before settling in: this isn’t a stretch where every swim gives you the same moving-water proposition.
- The Association highlights feeder fishing here, with slack-margin fishing an option in heavier conditions. No need to assume the middle is always the answer when there’s more water pushing through.
- There’s a useful seasonal steer too: the holder links barbel with the weir end and summer tench with the downstream end. Two different starting points, depending on what you fancy targeting.
- Park inside Manor Farm; the nearest swim is approximately 80 yards away. The field footpath can get muddy and waterlogged, so give your footwear a bit of thought before lugging the tackle across.
- Keep cattle drinking places clear when choosing where to set up. Appleford also appears as Sunday-bookable water in the 2024 handbook, so a quick check with the Association could save some faff.
Methods: Feeder fishing is the holder’s highlighted approach, with slack margins worth considering in heavier conditions. For a more targeted session, the Association points to the weir end for barbel and the downstream end for summer tench.
