River Thames — Sandford Lock and Meadow

Sandford Lock and Meadow is a cracking mixed-fish Thames venue run by Littlemore Angling Society, with 28 meadow pegs and plenty of match-fishing pedigree. There’s a lock cut too, plus weir water that needs respect — the small pool and main weir stream are very snaggy.

The lowdown

  • The meadow is the society’s main match venue, hosting most of its matches across a 28-peg length. That’s the heart of the fishing here, rather than just a little sideline to the lock.
  • Large shoals of roach, bream and chub give the meadow a proper mixed-river feel. Those are the headline shoal fish named for this section, so there’s plenty to catch your eye if you enjoy float fishing.
  • Tench and perch also turn up in match catches. It’s not all about the main three species, then — the meadow’s match fishing has a bit more variety than a straight roach-and-bream affair.
  • There’s a bigger-fish angle on the match length too: double-figure pike and carp are reported, alongside specimen chub and barbel. Those are reported fish, mind, not a promise of a lump every session.
  • The lock cut has its own named mix of roach, perch, carp, bream and chub. Keep that distinction in mind when choosing your bit of water: the cut and meadow aren’t described with exactly the same fish list.
  • Fancy a summer waggler session? The society specifically recommends hemp and tares from July/August. That’s the clearest seasonal steer here, and a lovely, straightforward starting point if you’re planning some float fishing.
  • The small weir pool and main weir stream are both described as very snaggy. Don’t mistake them for an easy, snag-free chuck; that warning deserves a proper place in your thinking before choosing a swim.
  • A cheeky evening extension needs the right permission. Ordinary day tickets finish at dusk, while night fishing is restricted to the weir streams and the Sandford Weir Stream night permit requires a Littlemore AS permit.

Methods: The society’s bob-on seasonal tip is waggler fishing with hemp and tares from July/August. Treat the small weir pool and main weir stream with care: both are described as very snaggy.
