We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is a feature-filled, preserved bit of the Thames, with several clubs sharing access across the Sandford-on-Thames and Kennington water.
- The AOAA section starts at the end of the Sandford Lane riverside car park and runs downstream along the right-hand bank.
- That section finishes at old gate posts, giving you a clearly defined stretch rather than a vague wander along the river.
- RDAA’s Sandford Weir venue is listed at 1,093 yards, so there’s a decent amount of water under the wider shared arrangement.
- The fish list is a tasty one: barbel, chub, roach, bream, perch and pike, with occasional carp also named on the RDAA water.
- It’s the sort of stretch where a careful look at the features should pay off. The clubs describe it as feature-filled, so expect plenty to investigate rather than a bland run of bank.
- Match your approach to the species in front of you. Trotting or a feeder suits the named silverfish and chub, while stronger tackle may be sensible where barbel or the occasional carp are the target.
- Pike are present too, so don’t forget the relevant kit and rules if you’re fishing for them. The river is closed from 15 March through 15 June inclusive.
- Night fishing is available to RDAA annual permit holders on Sandford Weir without an extra night permit. Littlemore also lists a separate night permit in its 2026 notice.
Methods: Trotting and feeder work are the obvious starting points for the named chub, roach, bream and barbel, with suitable tackle for perch, pike and the occasional carp. Keep things tidy and fish the features carefully.
