Abermule — BAA
Abermule is a cracking bit of upper Severn water in Powys, with roughly three-quarters of a mile on the BAA-held left bank. It’s got proper deep runs and shallow glides, so there’s enough variety for both coarse and game anglers.

The lowdown
- This is typical upper River Severn stuff — a nice mix of pace and depth rather than one flat, samey channel.
- The BAA-held bank is the left bank. The stretch starts immediately downstream of the BAA Aberbechan water.
- There’s approximately three-quarters of a mile to explore, with deep runs for holding fish and shallower glides that should suit a roving approach.
- For coarse fishing, trotting the glides or working a feeder through the deeper runs are the obvious starting points.
- The water is also described as suitable for game fishing, so trout and salmon are covered by BAA membership, subject to the bye-laws and the right Environment Agency licence.
- Access is off the A483 between Welshpool and Newtown. Turn at the Dolforwyn Hall sign, then follow the approach through two left turns to the farm yard.
- Look for the BAA PARK HERE sign. From there, follow the BAA signs on foot down to the river — nice and simple, with no need for a load of faff.
- The BAA handbook has the fuller maps, access routes and parking details, so it’s worth checking that before setting off.
- There’s no night fishing on this stretch. Plan a daylight session and keep within the BAA rules and access instructions.
Methods: Trotting the shallower glides and feeder fishing the deep runs look the bob-on starting points for coarse anglers. Game anglers have suitable water too, with trout and salmon covered by the membership terms and the appropriate Environment Agency licence.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
