The lowdown
- CAA controls roughly seven miles of double-bank fishing around Caersws, so there’s a fair bit of water to explore rather than a cramped handful of pegs.
- This is predominantly fly water. Upstream of the sign below the Carno Brook confluence, it’s fly-only, so keep the kit suitably tidy.
- Downstream of Caersws village, spinning and worm fishing are allowed. The section from the Carno Brook confluence down to opposite the former Llys Maldwyn Hospital is multi-method water.
- The Severn here is rain-fed, with compensation flows from Clywedog Reservoir helping in dry spells. Still, check the river level before setting off — it can make a big difference to wading and presentation.
- CAA highlights some cracking hatches, including Grannom, Stone/Needle flies and other upwinged species. Worth having a few matching patterns in the box.
- The water is especially noted for grayling. Grayling fishing runs from 16 June to 14 March, with barbless hooks required and every fish returned alive.
- Trout are in season from 18 March to 7 October. The limit is two fish a day, with a minimum size of 9 inches/22.5 cm.
- Salmon fishing runs from 1 February to 7 October, but it is fly-only with artificial lures. Salmon must be returned up to 15 June.
- There’s water on the Carno Brook and Afon Trannon too, both managed by CAA as fly-fishing water. Parking is available by the Caersws bridge noticeboard, with further options around Llandinam and Gravels Nature Reserve.
- Take care around the overhead power cables, and wear a flotation aid when wading. No keep nets, maggots or groundbait — nice and simple, but don’t rock up with the wrong gear.
Methods: Fly fishing is the main game, with artificial-lure salmon fishing and spinning or worm fishing allowed on the stated downstream sections. Match the hatch when the upwingers are popping, and keep presentations tidy in the flow.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
