Abernant Beat, Upper River Wye
Abernant is a cracking upper-Wye beat a few miles downstream of Builth Wells, with just under a mile of mostly left-bank fishing. It mixes gravel runs, named salmon pools and some sizeable chub and dace water.

The lowdown
- This is scenic upper-Wye country, with a proper mix of game and coarse fishing rather than one-trick water.
- The beat includes Lady Alexander’s Catch and Abernant Stream salmon pools, plus the named Edw Pool and Stone Catch.
- Most of the riverbed is gravel and relatively easy to wade. Chest waders are recommended if you want to make the most of the stretch.
- Stone Catch and Edw Pool are the trickier bits, with boulders and bedrock making wading harder. Stud or studded/felt soles are mandatory.
- Salmon fishing is available by day ticket and is catch-and-release at all times. A cracking option when the river has a bit of colour.
- Trout fishing is fly only, while winter grayling gives you another tidy reason to fish the beat when the colder months arrive.
- The beat holds salmon, trout, grayling, chub and dace, with some sizeable chub and dace reported. Plenty to keep an angler busy.
- Parking is followed by roughly a 200-metre walk to the middle section, so pack light and keep the faff down.
- Daily capacity is just three tickets, which should help keep the place feeling quiet. The owner may also fish, though, so complete exclusivity is not guaranteed.
- Evening tickets start from 5pm, with half-price evening tickets available after 1pm on the day of fishing. Dogs are welcome but must be kept under control.
Methods: Salmon is catch-and-release, trout is fly only, and winter grayling is available by ticket. Expect wading, named pools and gravel runs to suit fly fishing, with chub and dace adding a bit of coarse interest.
