The lowdown

  • This is a decent lump of Wye water, with the association controlling about five miles in total. It includes fishing around Rhayader itself.
  • The A470 and A44 run alongside the whole stretch, so access is described by the association as readily available. Handy, with less faff getting near the river.
  • The water runs through the upper Wye around Rhayader. It’s the sort of stretch where keeping an eye on the flow and colour should pay off.
  • Brown trout occur naturally here, and the river is stocked with brown trout every other year. Proper useful if you’re after a trout session.
  • The association describes the fishing as excellent for brown trout and grayling. Fly fishing is allowed across the association’s rivers.
  • Salmon are a big part of the Wye’s reputation. They reach the upper parts of the river towards the end of the season, so late-season timing matters.
  • Spinning and worm fishing are also allowed on the association’s rivers, giving you a few options when the fly isn’t playing ball.
  • The trout season runs from 3 March to 30 September. Coarse fishing runs from 16 June to 14 March, so check which rules apply before setting up.
  • The permit page also lists coarse fishing on the Wye water, although no particular coarse species are named for this stretch.

Methods: Fly fishing, spinning and worm fishing are allowed. For trout and grayling, cover the glides and creases with the fly; when there’s a bit of colour, spinning or worm fishing gives you a cheeky alternative.
