The lowdown

  • This is a substantial beat, running for approximately 1¼ miles near Erwood, around 7 miles downstream of Builth Wells.
  • The Wye is about 70 yards wide here, giving you plenty of water to work through rather than one cramped little swim.
  • It’s mostly double-bank fishing, with a tranquil feel and kingfishers — plus the occasional otter if you’re lucky.
  • Trout and grayling are fly only. Salmon can be targeted with fly or spinner when national byelaws allow.
  • There’s no coarse fishing on this beat, so leave the feeder gear and maggots at home. This one is all about the game fish.
  • Wading needs proper respect. Deep water and rocky bottoms can make things hazardous, so felt or studded soles are required.
  • A wading staff, wading belt and life preserver are recommended. Existing fishing boards are in disrepair and must not be used.
  • Daily capacity is capped at 5 tickets, which should help keep the beat feeling peaceful. Evening tickets kick in after 5pm from 1 May.
  • Dedicated gated off-road parking is provided, roughly 200 yards from the downstream end. There’s no public right of way along the beat.
  • Dogs are welcome but must stay under control. The fishery also operates a wash-off policy, so factor that into your kit and plans.

Methods: Fly fish for trout and grayling, with salmon available on fly or spinner when national byelaws permit. Keep things mobile across the long beat, but take the wading kit seriously around the deeper, rocky water.
