Upper Clochfaen
Upper Clochfaen is a cracking upper-Wye beat above Llangurig Bridge, with over two miles of mixed single- and double-bank water. It’s fly-only, limited to two rods a day, and geared towards a proper quality fish rather than stacking up huge numbers.

The lowdown
- The beat runs upstream from Llangurig Bridge for over two miles, giving you plenty of water to explore.
- It’s a mix of single-bank and double-bank fishing, so the character changes nicely as you move through the stretch.
- Much of the river is open water with very little vegetation behind you. That makes the back cast a fair bit less of a faff.
- Wading is generally easy, which is bob on for covering the glides and working out where the better fish are sitting.
- This is wild brown trout water, with a high average size noted as the main draw rather than massive numbers.
- Grayling fishing is available through the winter, and recent catch returns show their numbers increasing. A cheeky bonus when the trout season is done.
- Keep an eye on the flow and look for the crease, smoother glides and any depth that gives fish a bit of cover. The upper-Wye feel is open, varied and very fishable.
- There are only two trout rods available per day, with a maximum of two tickets overall. That keeps the stretch quiet and gives the water a proper chance to shine.
- The fishing is approximately 120 metres, or 140 yards, from the parking spot, so you won’t be dragging kit miles before reaching the swim.
- Evening tickets are half price and available from 4pm, with the relevant offer available from 1 May after 1pm on the fishing day.
Methods: Fly-fishing only, with barbless hooks and catch and release throughout. Work the glides and crease carefully, and make the most of the easy wading and open casting room.
