We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • KFAC has owned the fishing rights here since 1993, so this is an established club stretch rather than a bolt-on bit of river.
  • The fishery sits in the Unicorn Inn camping field, on the opposite bank to KFAC’s Hampton Loade section. It’s about half a mile upstream from there.
  • There are approximately 12 swims along the 300 yards. The bottom is relatively even, which makes the stretch feel pretty approachable when you’re figuring out where to fish.
  • The flow is more even than on the downstream Hampton Loade stretch. That’s a handy feature for keeping a float working properly through the swim.
  • Float fishing is a strong option here. Trotting through the crease or working a float over the steadier water should be well worth a go.
  • Barbel are the main attraction and the venue is known for them. KFAC says they can reach large sizes, so a sturdy setup is the order of the day.
  • Chub are present too, including reported fish around 6 lb. Roach over 1 lb have also been reported, with perch potential identified by KFAC.
  • The camping field can get busy in summer, and the stretch is less secluded than the downstream section. Expect more activity around the venue at peak times.
  • Night fishing is allowed, but bivvies and brollies must go on the river bank, not in the field. Camping charges may apply if you use a bivvy or tent on top of the bank.
  • The Unicorn Inn offers camping, bed-and-breakfast and self-catering accommodation beside the river, making this a handy venue for a proper fishing break.

Methods: The even flow and relatively level bottom make float fishing a natural starting point, especially for trotting. For barbel, a robust feeder approach is the obvious alternative, with tackle beefed up for the chance of a proper fish.
