River Severn — Lego Blocks, Buildwas

Lego Blocks is one of Telford Angling Association’s Buildwas waters on the Shropshire Severn, with barbel the main draw. Think bendier, shallower, faster and rockier water than TAA’s Dale End stretch — proper moving-water character.

The lowdown

  • Lego Blocks sits within TAA’s Buildwas waters. The association describes Buildwas as bendier, shallower, faster and rockier than Dale End, so that’s the character to have in mind when planning your session.
  • Barbel are the headline attraction at Buildwas. They’re the obvious starting point if you’re choosing what to target, rather than treating this as a venue with a promised catch list for every peg.
  • That faster, rockier description gives you something useful to work with. A feeder approach is worth considering, with your setup chosen to suit the flow in front of you rather than a fixed recipe.
  • Fancy a float session instead? Trotting is another approach to consider where the swim allows it. Let the actual flow and depth guide you — there’s no need to force one method onto every bit of river.
  • TAA’s wider Severn fish list includes chub, roach, bream, pike, perch and rudd, plus very small numbers of carp. That’s the association’s shared list, not a promise that they all occupy Lego Blocks.
  • Parking is a small car park at the old bridge entrance, followed by a walk to the river. Keep the bridge clear: parking on it is prohibited, not a cheeky overflow option.
  • Give the access some thought before loading up with kit. TAA says many Severn pegs involve steps, and ground can become sodden at high water levels. It describes its Severn access as unsuitable for disabled access.
  • Get your day ticket sorted before fishing, or use your membership. Adult members aged 18 or over have river night fishing included; keep the statutory river coarse-fishing close season in mind when picking your dates.

Methods: A feeder approach for the Buildwas barbel is worth considering, matching the setup to that faster, rockier water. Trotting is another option where the swim allows — let the flow and depth in front of you make the call.

Key rules

  • Observe the statutory river coarse-fishing close season. Targeted game fishing and eel fishing are prohibited.
  • Return all fish alive. Carp and barbel must not be retained in keepnets during pleasure fishing.
  • Use no more than three rods, with the appropriate licence. There is no barbless-hook-only rule on the River Severn.
  • Each angler must have an appropriately sized knotless landing net.
  • Juniors aged 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Transfer tinned bait into a bait container; tins must not be used on the bank.
  • No fires or barbecues. Take litter and used fishing line home.
  • Buy day tickets before fishing, and do not park on the bridge.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
