River Severn — Leighton
The lowdown
- This isn't just a handful of swims by a bridge. The society's water extends downstream from Cressage Bridge, through Leighton Estate and almost to Buildwas — approximately 4.5 miles of bank all told.
- There are 124 marked fishing pegs across the stretch. That's a useful numbered layout to work with when discussing access or arranging a session with a member, rather than relying on vague bank-side directions.
- Want less of a tackle-carrying faff? The first 35 pegs have vehicle access. Keep that distinction in mind: the vehicle-access information applies to those opening pegs, not automatically to the whole stretch.
- Most of those first 35 pegs are described as suitable for disabled anglers. That's a handy starting point for choosing access, though 'most' doesn't mean every one of those swims suits every angler.
- Barbel exceeding 12 lb and chub exceeding 6 lb are named here. Proper fish, and two clear targets if they're your thing — without needing to dress the stretch up with promises about what you'll catch.
- There's plenty beyond barbel and chub: bream exceed 8 lb, perch exceed 3 lb, and roach and dace are present. A mixed-species session has more than one possible target on this bit of river.
- Pike exceed 20 lb, while occasional carp also exceed 20 lb. Keep that word 'occasional' attached to the carp; they're part of the line-up, not a promise. Salmon are named too.
- Sort the ticket before the tackle. Membership applications are open to all, while guests need an accompanying member. Night fishing is prohibited, and membership finishes at calendar-year end — worth remembering when planning your season.
Methods: Pick your target before sorting the tackle: barbel and chub are on the list, alongside bream, roach, dace and perch. The occasional carp and the pike give you other options too.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
