Warrington Anglers Association — River Severn, Loton Park

A cracking four-mile Severn stretch through the Loton Park Estate, around eight miles south of Shrewsbury. It’s members-only water with proper depth close in and a bit of graft needed to make some swims.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is a long single-bank stretch, running through the Loton Park Estate at Alderbury. Plenty of water to explore, with around four miles of river to go at.
  • The Severn can be seriously deep tight to the bank here. Some spots run at 7–10 feet, so don’t assume the margins are shallow just because you’re fishing close in.
  • The banks vary. In places, nettles and reeds need clearing before you’ve got a comfortable swim. A little prep before settling in is part of the deal.
  • Access gets much trickier after rain. The flood plain can stop you driving right down to the river, with parking then restricted to farm lanes.
  • In dry conditions, dirt tracks may give access to the bank, but a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended if you’re taking the car in. Don’t force it when the ground is soft.
  • There’s parking at either end of the stretch, giving you a couple of sensible starting points for a wander and a look before picking a swim.
  • The named fish list is a tidy one: chub, barbel, dace, roach, bream, carp, perch, pike, eels, trout, grayling and salmon.
  • With that depth and mixed species, trotting, feeder work and sensible ledgering are the obvious approaches. Keep an eye on the crease, near-bank depth and any reedier edges.
  • The rules are tight, so pack light and fish neatly. Two rods are allowed, with no more than two hooks, and only rod, pole and line methods are permitted unless written approval is given.

Methods: Trotting, feeder and ledgering are the natural starting points, working the crease, deeper near-bank water and reedier edges. Take time to make a safe swim and keep everything tidy.

Key rules

  • River fisheries follow Environment Agency close seasons and by-laws.
  • Anglers must hold a current Environment Agency licence.
  • Unhooking mats are compulsory when targeting carp, pike, tench, bream or barbel.
  • Members may use up to two rods with a maximum of two hooks, unless a listed water-specific exception applies.
  • Only rod, pole and line methods are permitted unless written approval is obtained.
  • Boat fishing is prohibited.
  • No tents, fires, disposable barbecues, single-use bottles, cans or packaging are allowed. All litter must be removed.
  • Fish must be released before moving pegs. Most fish over 2.5 lb cannot be retained in keepnets unless permission is given or it is an authorised match.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
