River Trent – Enson to Weston, Staffordshire

A proper sweep of Staffordshire Trent: roughly three miles between Enson and Weston, run by Saracens Head Angling Group. Deep bends, long pools and faster runs give it plenty of character, with high banks needing a bit of care.

The lowdown

  • There’s approximately three miles of river between Enson and Weston, with the Trent & Mersey Canal alongside. That’s the broad layout; use the club’s access details rather than guessing your way onto the bank.
  • Deep sweeping bends and long pools are the standout features here. Think carefully about how you’ll fish and land a fish in your chosen swim, especially where those banks sit high above the water.
  • The faster runs bring a different bit of character to the stretch, with trout and grayling present. It’s not all deep, sweeping water, so bear that change in pace in mind when choosing a swim.
  • The club reports chub up to 6lb and barbel up to 10lb. Cracking fish to have on the radar, but those figures aren’t a promise of what’ll be on the munch when you arrive.
  • A long landing-net handle is worth taking seriously here: the club advises 3–4m. Some swims need care, so sort out your landing arrangements before settling in, not once you’ve got a fish on.
  • Summer vegetation can get vigorous along the bank. Give yourself time to find the marked access and assess your swim; a bankside spot needs more thought than simply finding somewhere to put a rod.
  • Access is available from the canal and other marked points. Members can find maps, parking notes and precise directions in the members area, which is the place to sort the practical bits before heading out.
  • Keep the approach within the river rules: no groundbait or loose feed, barbless hooks only and no more than two rods. Overnight fishing is prohibited too, so this isn’t one for an overnight session.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: Use the deep pools, sweeping bends and faster runs to guide your swim choice. Whatever your approach, keep it barbless and skip groundbait and loose feed completely.
