River Avon at Wasperton

Wasperton is an extensive, picturesque Warwickshire Avon stretch run by Royal Leamington Spa Angling Association. The club says it’s returning to its best, with plenty of fresh fish stocked after the 2023 fish deaths.

The lowdown

  • This is a proper Avon Valley setting, with the river winding through open countryside around Wasperton. Sounds like a cracking backdrop for a day on the bank.
  • The association describes the fishing as extensive, so there’s plenty of water to explore rather than just one short run of pegs.
  • More than 20,000 chub, dace, roach, bream and barbel were stocked after fish deaths in June 2023. That’s a serious boost for the stretch.
  • The club reckons Wasperton is a superb venue at any time of the season. Expect classic river fishing rather than a one-trick pond-style approach.
  • Look for the usual Avon features: steadier glides, crease lines and any neater-looking flow. The checked details don’t give exact depths or named swims, so don’t go charging in assuming every peg fishes the same.
  • Trotting should be well worth a look for the river silverfish, while a feeder gives you a tidy way of finding barbel, bream and chub when the flow is pushing.
  • A bit of colour after rain could really liven things up, particularly for chub and barbel. In clearer, lower conditions, keep things neat and work the water rather than piling bait in.
  • The stretch is mainly for association members, not a standard public day-ticket wander. Any pegs left out of a pre-booked match are available for members.
  • There’s no night fishing, and parking is only allowed in designated areas. Leave gates and tracks clear, with extra care in the first meadow so tractors and trailers can get through.

Methods: Keep it versatile: trot for dace, roach and chub, then switch to feeder tactics for bream and barbel. Pike lure fishing is allowed in season, with the club’s trace and barbless-treble rules followed.

Key rules

  • Statutory close season: 15 March to 15 June each year.
  • A suitable landing net and unhooking mat are compulsory.
  • Barbel must not be retained in keepnets.
  • Maximum of two rods per angler.
  • Carp sacks are not permitted.
  • Live baiting is prohibited. Freshwater fish cannot be used as live or dead bait.
  • Dead baiting is permitted only from 1 October to 14 March. Pike lure fishing is permitted during the fishing season.
  • A gaff is prohibited. A wire trace is required for deadbaiting or lure fishing, and all trebles must be barbless.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
