River Aire – Kildwick to Steeton

A cracking 650-metre Aire beat between Kildwick and Steeton, run by Bradford City Angling Association. It’s a quiet, underfished stretch aimed mainly at fly fishing for wild brown trout and grayling, with steep banks, quick water and a bit of effort needed to get in.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • The fishery runs from the confluence with Eastburn Beck down to a culvert entering from the right bank. It’s a decent bit of river, but the access isn’t exactly bob on.
  • Fishing is from the right bank when facing downstream. The beat runs alongside the A629, so take proper care when crossing the fast dual carriageway.
  • Expect steep banks and dense summer vegetation. The association has cut access paths and added steps in places, which helps, but there’s still some faff involved.
  • Careful wading is required in places. Keep your footing switched on, especially where the flow pushes through faster water and around the crease.
  • The upper part of the beat is described as especially productive for brownies and grayling. That’s the main game here, with the venue primarily suited to fly fishing.
  • It’s a mixed fishery, with chub, barbel and pike also listed by the association. There’s enough variety to keep things interesting when the trout and grayling aren’t playing ball.
  • A light fly approach looks the natural fit, working the glides and likely lies carefully rather than charging about. The river’s wild fish and tricky access reward a quiet approach.
  • The published season runs from 25 March to 14 March of the following year. It’s strictly catch and release, so handle every fish properly and get it back smartly.
  • Parking is available in a lay-by on the A629, 150 metres west of Eastburn Beck bridge when travelling towards Kildwick. There’s another lay-by around 600 metres east of the bridge at the lower end.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: Primarily fly fishing for wild brown trout and grayling. Only barbless or de-barbed flies may be used, with careful wading and fish handling essential.
