River Wharfe at Otley

A proper club-controlled stretch of the Wharfe through Otley, running from above Otley Bridge down to Caley Lodge on Pool Road. It’s varied flowing water with trout and grayling the main targets, plus a few other Wharfe favourites in the mix.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • The published upstream limit is above Otley Bridge, so the town-centre landmark is a handy reference point.
  • Downstream, the water finishes at Caley Lodge on Pool Road. All told, the stretch is approximately 3.7 miles.
  • The described club water is principally the north bank. Worth checking the exact access position with Otley Angling Club before setting off.
  • Otley Weir is the big obvious feature near the town centre. It gives this bit of river plenty of character.
  • The Wharfe here has varied flowing-water habitat around Otley, with plenty of classic river water rather than one uniform channel.
  • Trout and grayling are the characteristic targets for the Otley Wharfe fishery. A cracking combination for anyone who likes proper running water.
  • Chub, barbel and perch are also reported from the Wharfe around Otley, so there’s a cheeky bit of variety beyond the main targets.
  • The inspected water included the section from Hundwith Beck to the River Washburn, with the Wharfe sections totalling about 3,710 metres.
  • This is membership-controlled club water. No public day tickets are issued, so don’t turn up expecting to buy one on the bank.
  • The separate Three Corner Field coarse-fishing pond is not part of this river stretch. Its access is via the Knotford Nook turn-off from Pool Road, so don’t mix the two venues up.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: The facts point to varied flowing water and trout, grayling, chub, barbel and perch around Otley. Pick your approach to the flow and the swim, but confirm the current club rules before fishing.

Key rules

  • Membership-only water.
  • No public day tickets are issued.
  • Fishing rights, access and current rules should be confirmed with Otley Angling Club before visiting.
  • An Environment Agency rod licence is required in addition to club permission.
  • The Three Corner Field coarse-fishing pond is a separate club venue from the River Wharfe water.
