We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is a proper long bit of Wharfe, stretching roughly four miles from the River Washburn downstream to the bottom-limit car park.
- The fishery sits around Pool-in-Wharfedale, with access tied in with Pool, Leathley Lane and Castley Lane. Handy enough, without loads of faff.
- Fishing is from the left bank only, so have a good look at the society’s venue map before heading off. It’ll save a wander in the wrong direction.
- The water has both coarse-fishing and trout-fishing character. The checked details don’t name the individual coarse species, so there’s no point guessing what might turn up.
- Expect proper river water rather than a neat little pond-style venue. Read the flow, look for the crease and keep an eye out for steadier glides and likely holding water.
- There’s a match-booking section between the Paper Mill weir upstream and the River Washburn left bank. That section is available for bookings from 16 June.
- For a general approach, trotting or working a feeder through the steadier bits makes sense, while trout anglers can fish the water in its trout-fishing character. Keep things mobile and watch the pace.
- Parking is available in the lay-by down Leathley Lane, by the petrol station, and downstream on Castley Lane where marked on the venue map.
- Lighting-up-time restrictions apply, so check the published local times before planning a late session. Members also need to leave dogs and bicycles at home when heading onto the river bank.
Methods: Trotting and feeder work are the obvious coarse approaches, picking apart the steadier glides and crease. For the trout side, fish it as a moving-water venue and stay alert to changes in pace and depth.
