Salisbury Town Water

Salisbury Town Water is a cracking chalk-stream stretch on the River Avon, running through the city and out into adjoining countryside. It’s a day-ticket coarse fishery with both banks available, proper flow, and a good chance of a chunky roach.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • The Town Water day-ticket section runs for over a mile. It forms part of the club’s combined Town Water and Parsonage Farm fishery, which is approximately 1.5 miles in total.
  • This is classic Avon stuff: flowing chalk-stream water, urban river scenery, riverside paths and quieter countryside sections. A nice mix rather than one long, samey run.
  • Both banks are available, so there’s scope to switch sides and find the better line on the day. Stick to the club’s marked access points, though — no freelancing through odd gaps.
  • The club describes it as an excellent coarse fishery. Roach and dace are the headline fish, with a good chance of roach over 2 lb. That’s a proper target on lighter tackle.
  • Grayling are present in good numbers, while chub and pike add a bit of variety. Keep your eyes peeled around steadier water, features and any crease where the flow changes.
  • Trotting looks the natural first approach for the roach and dace. Keep things tidy, control the float through the run and work the pace rather than just chucking in and hoping.
  • A feeder can sort you out when the river has a bit more push, especially where the flow settles. Chub are worth thinking about around cover and changes in depth.
  • The coarse season runs from 16 June to 14 March inclusive. Fishing is dawn to dusk only, so there’s no sneaky night session here.
  • The official map marks access points A1 to A4 and parking points P1 and P2. The club supplies the map after an online booking, which makes the access faff a lot easier.
  • All coarse fish go straight back. Grayling must not be kept in keepnets before 1 October, and any trout or salmon caught by accident must be returned immediately.

Methods: Trotting is the obvious bob-on starting point for the roach and dace, with feeder tactics handy when the Avon is pushing. Chub and pike give you a cheeky change of plan around cover, depth changes and steadier water.
