We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is a beautiful, tranquil stretch at Knightwick, booked exclusively for groups of up to four anglers per day. Nice and private, with no crowding or peg-hoarding faff.
- The river has plenty going on. Expect fast shallows, deep pools, gravel-bottom glides and eddies, so there’s a swim for most moods and methods.
- Undercut banks and overhanging willows provide cover. Worth giving these areas a good look, especially when the fish are tucked tight to the bank or the river has a bit of colour.
- Barbel are the headline act here and are described as prolific and very large. Plenty over 10 lb have been landed, with barbel over 12 lb recorded on the stretch.
- Chub are abundant too, with pike, roach and dace also named for the water. That gives you a decent spread of targets rather than a one-fish-only sort of day.
- Ledgering with meat is on the menu for the barbel, while feeder fishing should suit the deeper water, crease lines and steady glides. Keep things tidy around the cover.
- Long trotting is available when conditions are right. The gravel-bottomed glides and varied flow look the natural places to work a float through, with roving another listed approach.
- Access is well sorted. There’s very accessible off-road parking, a designated parking area by the river and a mown footpath leading to the swims.
- Some steeper swims have ropes to help with access in wet weather. A camping area is available subject to weather conditions, handy for making a proper trip of it.
- A two-hour guided tour can be added, covering the best swims, rigs and baits. A bob-on option if you want to get settled quickly on unfamiliar water.
Methods: Ledger meat for barbel, feeder fishing, long trotting and roving are all offered. Fish the pools, glides, eddies and cover, adapting to the flow and conditions on the day.
