We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is a lower-bank Avon stretch, and the association says it’s less prone to flooding than the River Severn. Handy when the weather turns a bit lively.
- There are 30 pegs along roughly 750 metres, giving plenty of room to find a swim that suits the conditions.
- The riverbed is mostly clay, with gravel in places. Ledges crop up through much of the stretch, although take care — they form where the bank has slipped and may be unstable.
- The Big U bend is the headline feature. There’s a seriously deep hole there, reaching about 22 feet in summer.
- Away from the bend, the main channel is around 11–13 feet deep. That gives you proper depth to work a float or feeder through.
- Stick-float fishing gets a specific thumbs-up here. It sounds bob on for working a bait through the flow and picking your line through the crease.
- The stretch is suitable for various methods, so there’s scope to switch things around with conditions — float, feeder and predator approaches are all mentioned.
- For predators, the association specifically highlights perch, pike and zander. The wider fish list also includes barbel, chub, bream, rudd, roach, eel and carp.
- Access is from the B4084 near Pershore, turning into Wick and then Owlets Lane. Go through the farmyard and look for the Bridgwater Angling Association sign.
- Dry-weather parking is available at the access, with a shared wet-weather car park further down the track. The official what3words location is covers.carefully.howler.
Methods: A proper all-rounder, with stick-float fishing particularly suited to the stretch. Feeder work and predator fishing for perch, pike and zander are also options.
