Who it suits

Is it right for you?

Great for

  • Pike lure anglers. The retrieve rate, spool control and useful line capacity make it well suited to casting larger lures and working a bait back with confidence.
  • Anglers who like classic round baitcasters. You get the familiar Ambassadeur shape, strong gearing and a proper mechanical feel rather than a tiny, over-complicated package.

Maybe skip if

  • Ultra-light lure specialists. The 283 g body and round format are more at home with medium-to-heavy predator work than delicate finesse fishing.
  • Anglers chasing the smallest modern reel. Low-profile reels generally sit closer to the rod and can feel neater in the hand for constant casting.

Quick verdict

Verdict: old-school shape, proper fishing performance

The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur C4 5601 is a sturdy, capable baitcaster that makes loads of sense for predator work. It’s got a useful 6.3:1 retrieve, a strong Carbon Matrix drag and enough line capacity for serious pike fishing.

The round profile won’t suit everyone, especially if you want the smallest, slickest low-profile reel around. But if you like dependable mechanics, a synchronised level wind and a reel with a bit of backbone, this is spot on.

The full rundown

Everything you'll want to know about the Abu Garcia Ambassadeur C4 5601

There’s something properly appealing about an Ambassadeur. Maybe it’s the round body, the solid click of the controls or that feeling you’re holding a bit of fishing tackle rather than a tiny bit of space-age plastic. The Abu Garcia C4 5601 keeps that classic character, but gives it the speed and control a modern predator angler actually needs.

This is the left-hand retrieve model, so it suits the very common cast-right, wind-left style. That means you can fire a lure out, thumb the spool, and get straight onto the handle without doing the old awkward hand swap. Dead handy when a pike follows right to the boat or a fish smashes a lure at the end of the retrieve.

At 283 g, it isn’t a dainty little number. You’ll notice that round Ambassadeur body on a lighter rod, and it’s not trying to be an ultra-light finesse reel. But for proper pike tackle, where you’re lobbing bigger lures, casting soft plastics or fishing a beefier bait rod, the weight feels much more at home.

The 6.3:1 gear ratio gives you 76 cm of line per turn. That’s a useful middle ground. Fast enough to pick up slack after a long cast and keep a spinnerbait or jerkbait moving, but not so frantic that every retrieve turns into a mad blur. For general predator work, it’s a bob-on ratio.

Inside, the C4 5601 brings four stainless-steel ball bearings and a roller bearing, along with Abu Garcia’s Duragear 2 gear system. The point here isn’t fancy brochure fluff. It’s about keeping the reel feeling positive when a decent fish turns its head and you need to lean on it a bit.

The Carbon Matrix drag is rated up to 15 lb, or 6.8 kg. That gives you plenty of headroom for pike, and it’s useful when a fish dives into weed or tries to bury itself in the margins. As ever, don’t just crank it solid and hope for the best. Match the drag to your leader, hooks and snag situation.

Capacity is another big tick. You get 220 m of 0.32 mm line capacity, with the published figures also covering 240 yards of 12 lb mono and 235 yards of 30 lb braid. That’s loads of room for most bank and boat predator fishing, whether you like a sensible mono backing or a braid main line.

The spool is aluminium and the reel uses a six-pin centrifugal braking system. For casting, that gives you a clear way to control spool speed, especially when you’re throwing heavier lures into a headwind. Start with more braking, thumb the spool smoothly and ease it off once everything’s behaving. Don’t go straight for maximum distance and invite a bird’s nest from the gods.

The synchronised level wind is a proper practical feature too. It moves with the spool as you retrieve, helping lay the line neatly and taking away one more bit of faff. It’s especially welcome when you’re fishing braid and changing lure angles all day. Made in Sweden, the C4 5601 has the sort of purposeful build that should appeal to anglers who’d rather spend their session fishing than fiddling with a reel that feels a bit naff.

Our take

The angle: a reel built around control

The C4 5601 isn’t trying to be a featherweight finesse reel. Its appeal is control, capacity and proper mechanical confidence for lure fishing, deadbaits and heavier predator rigs.

That six-pin centrifugal brake gives you a useful starting point for taming the spool, while the aluminium spool, Duragear 2 gearing and Carbon Matrix drag give it the right toolkit for hard-pulling fish and repeated casting.

What you’re buying

A classic round reel with predator-friendly muscle

The C4 5601 is a conventional round baitcaster with a left-hand handle, aluminium spool and synchronised level wind. It’s not designed to disappear in your palm like a tiny low-profile reel. Instead, it gives you a solid platform for bigger lures, stronger line and fish that don’t always play nicely.

The six-pin centrifugal brake is the main casting-control feature. Use it to slow the spool early in the cast, then let your thumb manage the final part of the flight. Heavier lures are generally straightforward, while lighter or more wind-resistant offerings need a bit more care and brake.

The 6.3:1 gearing and 76 cm retrieve rate work nicely for pike work. You can wind a lure at a decent pace, take up slack quickly after a long chuck and stay connected when a fish follows right to the net. The Carbon Matrix drag gives you useful adjustment when a lump decides the margins look better than open water.

Worth knowing. The round body and 283 g weight are part of the deal. They bring strength and capacity, but this isn’t the reel to pair with a tiny finesse rod for delicate perch lures.

Find your fit

Best with proper predator tackle

For a pike angler throwing medium to heavy lures, the C4 5601 has a lot going for it. The capacity is generous, the retrieve is practical and the brake gives you a sensible route to controlled casting. Pair it with a suitable baitcasting rod, braid and a reliable wire or hard leader, then keep your thumb ready around the spool.

It also makes sense for anglers who fish from boats or roomy bank swims, where the extra bulk isn’t a nuisance. The synchronised level wind is handy when you’re making repeated casts and winding quickly, while the strong drag gives you confidence around weed, snags and tight margins.

It’s less convincing for someone who spends all day flicking tiny lures for perch or wants the lightest possible outfit. There are neater, lower-profile options for that job. The C4 5601 is happier when there’s a bit of meat on the lure and a proper predator at the other end.

Worth knowing. If you’re new to baitcasters, spend ten minutes setting the brake and spool tension beside the water before chasing distance. A controlled cast that lands your lure on the spot beats a heroic bosh followed by five minutes of picking out a bird’s nest.

Quick answers

The bits anglers usually want to know

Is it a good all-round pike reel? Yes, within the baitcaster category. Its capacity, drag and retrieve rate cover a wide range of lure fishing, while the round design gives it a sturdy feel. Just match it to a rod and lure range that can handle its size.

Can you use braid on it? Yes. The listed capacity is 235 yards of 30 lb braid, and the spool also has a published capacity of 220 m of 0.32 mm line. Use a sensible backing arrangement if needed, and make sure the braid is packed tightly and evenly.

Does the left-hand retrieve matter? It does if you’ve got a strong preference. With the 5601, right-handed casters can keep the rod in the casting hand and wind left-handed. If that’s your natural style, it keeps the whole cast-and-retrieve routine smooth.

Worth knowing. Give the level wind, spool and drag a basic clean after a hard session, especially if you’ve been fishing weed or grit. A little care keeps the reel feeling sweet and stops a good tool becoming a faff.

  • Useful 76 cm retrieve for working lures and taking up slack quickly.
  • Good capacity for pike and general predator fishing.

  • Six-pin centrifugal braking is simple to understand and tune.

Worth knowing

  • The round body is bulkier than many modern low-profile baitcasters.

Your questions answered

What anglers want to know

The stuff you’d ask your mate on the next peg. Straight answers, no waffle.

01

Is the Abu Garcia Ambassadeur C4 5601 left-hand retrieve?

Yes. The 5601 is the left-hand retrieve version. That’s handy if you prefer to cast right-handed and wind with your left hand, without swapping hands after every cast.

02

What sort of fishing suits the C4 5601?

It’s aimed at predator anglers, particularly pike lure fishing and other jobs where a baitcaster, decent capacity and a strong drag are useful. It has enough control for heavier lure work and enough capacity for longer-range fishing.

03

How do you set the six-pin centrifugal brake?

Start conservatively with more brake engaged, especially with a new lure or a fresh spool of braid. Make sure the spool tension is sensible, then back the brake off gradually as your thumb control improves. A couple of clicks of adjustment can make a big difference.
