Who it suits

Is it right for you?

Great for

  • Carp anglers fishing helicopter or chod rigs. The leader arrives configured for the job, so you can spend less time tying and more time getting the rods on the spot.
  • Anglers fishing weed, silt or mixed lakebeds. The pinned-down tungsten sections and choice of colours make it a sensible option when presentation and discreet tackle matter.

Maybe skip if

  • Anglers who build every rig from individual components. You may prefer buying leader material, beads and swivels separately for full control over every little detail.
  • Anyone needing a longer custom leader. The fixed 1 metre length is convenient, but it won’t cover every distance or presentation preference.

Quick verdict

Verdict

This is a proper handy leader for anglers who want helicopter or chod rigs sorted quickly. The fused construction, tungsten sections and ready-fitted components take a fair bit of faff out of the job.

It’s not the cheapest way to build a rig from scratch, and one leader per pack means you’ll want a few tucked in the tackle box. But for a clean, pinned-down, No Trace setup, it’s a bob-on bit of kit.

The full rundown

Everything you'll want to know about the Korda Dark Matter Heli Leader

There’s a lot to like about helicopter rigs, especially when the lakebed is doing its best to ruin a tidy presentation. A bit of chod, some soft silt or a patch of low weed can make a standard bottom-bait setup a right pain. That’s where a decent leader earns its keep.

The Korda Dark Matter Heli Leader is made for exactly that sort of job. It’s a ready-made, fused leader for helicopter and chod rigs, with tungsten sections built into the material to help everything hug the lakebed. No dangling leader waving about above the lead. No needless faff on the bank.

You get a 1 metre leader with a 30lb breaking strain. One end has a fused loop for connecting to your main line, while the other has a Kwik Link for attaching the lead. That makes the basic setup pleasingly straightforward, even when the light’s going and the rods are due to be clipped up.

The hook link attaches to the supplied ring swivel. That’s the bit that allows the rig to rotate around the leader, helping the hook link settle over less-than-perfect ground. It’s the reason helicopter and chod presentations are so useful when a smooth, clean lakebed is nowhere to be found.

Korda has also built in its No Trace System. That matters because a leader should do more than look tidy. If things go pear-shaped, the rig needs to offer a sensible way for the fish to shed the lead and avoid towing a whole load of terminal tackle around. The Dark Matter arrangement is designed with that safety angle in mind.

There’s a Helicopter Sleeve included too. It helps reduce tangles during the cast, which is dead handy when you’re firing a rig towards a distant margin or trying to drop it neatly on a small spot. Nobody wants to reel in after a cracking-looking cast and find the hook link wrapped round the leader.

The integral tungsten sections are another strong point. They help the leader pin down, keeping it close to the bottom rather than lifting away from the lakebed. That can be useful around wary carp, but it’s just as relevant when you’re fishing a choddy or weedy spot where a neat, low-profile presentation gives you a better chance of a pick-up.

Colour choice is decent as well. You can go for Clear, Weed, Gravel, Silt or Clay, depending on the bottom in front of you. It’s not magic camouflage, of course, but matching the leader to the swim is a sensible little edge. If the water’s clear and the fish are spooky, those small details can add up.

There are two spare No Trace beads in the pack, which is a nice touch. The leader is supplied as one complete unit, so this isn’t the option for someone who wants to strip everything down and rebuild it their own way. But if you want a clean helicopter or chod rig with the important bits already sorted, it’s a cracking shortcut.

The main drawback is value if you’re constantly tying fresh leaders. You only get one per pack, and a fully custom setup can work out cheaper over time. Still, for quick rig changes, travelling light or keeping a reliable spare ready for a bite-time switch, the Dark Matter Heli Leader is proper handy tackle. It gets you fishing with less faff and plenty of the right safety thinking built in.

Our take

The angle

The big selling point here is convenience without throwing away the important safety features. You get the leader, ring swivel, Kwik Link, helicopter sleeve and No Trace beads in one neat package.

That makes it especially useful when you’re switching swims or rigs in a hurry. Tie the main line to the fused loop, attach the lead to the Kwik Link, connect your hook link to the ring swivel and you’re away.

The tungsten sections help the leader sit tight to the lakebed, while the helicopter arrangement lets the hook link rotate around the leader. That’s exactly the sort of setup many carp anglers reach for over soft weed, chod or uneven lakebeds.

What you’re buying

A ready-made leader with the fiddly bits handled

The Dark Matter Heli Leader is a 1 metre fused leader with a 30lb breaking strain. Tungsten sections are integrated into the leader to help it sit tight to the lakebed, while the abrasion-resistant material gives it useful protection around rougher ground.

The connections are already sorted. Use the fused loop for the main line, attach your lead to the Kwik Link and connect the hook link to the ring swivel. The Helicopter Sleeve helps keep the cast tidy and the rig rotating as intended.

Worth knowing. Two spare No Trace beads are included. Keep them in your tackle box rather than chucking them loose in a pocket — they’re easy to lose and useful when you need to rebuild the safety arrangement.

On the bank

A strong choice when the bottom is awkward

This leader makes most sense for carp anglers using helicopter or chod presentations over weed, silt, gravel or chod. It’s especially useful when you need the hook link to settle independently around the leader instead of lying in one fixed position.

Choose the colour to suit the swim: Weed for low weed, Gravel for a stony bottom, or Silt and Clay when the lakebed is darker and softer. Clear gives you a less coloured option when you don’t want to overthink the match.

It’s also a handy spare for sessions where you’re moving about. Keep one ready, tie the main line to the loop, add your lead and hook link, and you can get the rods back on the spot without a full terminal-tackle rebuild.

Quick answers

The bits anglers usually want to know

The standard version is 30lb. Korda also offers a 40lb European version, so check the pack carefully if you need the heavier option for a particular situation.

One leader is supplied per pack. The available colours are Clear, Weed, Gravel, Silt and Clay, giving you a decent spread for common lakebed types.

Worth knowing. This is a helicopter and chod leader, not a universal replacement for every lead arrangement. If you mainly fish fixed leads, inline leads or fully custom leaders, another setup may suit your usual rigs better.

Pros & cons

What we like

  • Ready-made helicopter or chod leader with the key components already fitted.
  • Tungsten sections help keep the leader pinned down.
  • No Trace System and spare beads give you useful safety backup.
  • Abrasion-resistant construction suits rougher lakebeds and snaggy areas.
  • Several colour options make it easier to match the lakebed.

Your questions answered

What anglers want to know

The stuff you’d ask your mate on the next peg. Straight answers, no waffle.

01

What is the Korda Dark Matter Heli Leader used for?

It’s designed for helicopter and chod rigs. The hook link attaches via the ring swivel and can rotate around the leader, while the lead connects to the Kwik Link.

02

How does the No Trace System help?

The system is designed to let the lead and rig separate safely if the leader is damaged or the lead becomes stuck. The supplied beads form part of that setup, with two spares included.

03

Which colour should I choose?

Pick the colour closest to the lakebed or weed in your swim. Clear, Weed, Gravel, Silt and Clay options are available, so you can keep things suitably discreet.
