Who it suits

Is it right for you?

Great for

  • Carp and coarse anglers cooking solo or as a pair. The compact pans are spot on for toasties, breakfast bits and quick hot meals without taking over the bivvy table.
  • Anglers using traditional stoves or direct heat. It’s designed around those heat sources and gives you plenty of cooking options in a small package.

Maybe skip if

  • Anyone cooking on an induction hob. This toaster isn’t suitable for induction, so you’ll need a compatible stove or another heat source.
  • Groups needing big portions. The pans are deliberately compact, so batch cooking for several hungry anglers could become a bit of a faff.

Quick verdict

Verdict

This is a cracking bit of bank cookware for anyone who wants hot food without lugging a full kitchen around. The two-pan setup gives you a sandwich toaster when joined together, then a pair of separate frying pans when you need them.

It’s light, compact and properly versatile. The lack of induction compatibility is the main catch, but for a traditional stove or direct heat source, it’s a very handy bit of kit that should earn its place in the brew kit.

The full rundown

Everything you'll want to know about the RidgeMonkey Connect Sandwich Toaster

There’s something properly satisfying about hot food on the bank. A bacon sarnie when the rods are quiet. A toasted cheese job after a chilly night. Maybe a couple of eggs while you’re watching the margins. The RidgeMonkey Connect Sandwich Toaster is built for exactly that sort of grub, without asking you to pack half the kitchen.

At first glance, it looks like a straightforward toastie maker. Two pans clamp together, you add your bread and filling, then get it over the heat. Simple bosh. But that’s only half the story, because the hinge comes apart and the cooker becomes two separate frying pans.

That turns it from a one-trick snack gadget into a useful bit of coarse-fishing cookware. Use one pan for bacon and the other for eggs. Warm a tin of something while frying a few sausages. Or cook a quick meal when you’ve got a longer session ahead and don’t fancy living off crisps and squashed biscuits.

The pans are made from lightweight aluminium, which keeps the whole setup easy to carry. Complete with handles and utensils, it weighs around 670g. That’s not going to ruin your barrow load or make your carryall feel like you’ve packed a cast-iron skillet. The individual pans are around 275g each, too.

Packing is helped by the removable magnetic cool-touch thermoset-plastic handles. With the handles off, the kit takes up less room and is easier to slide into a rucksack, tackle bag or cooking box. There’s also a protective pouch included, which keeps the pieces together and helps stop the non-stick surfaces getting knocked about by bits of terminal tackle.

The granite-style non-stick coating is another big plus on the bank. It should mean less oil, less sticking and less frantic scraping when you’re trying to clean up before bite-time. The coating is PFOA-free, and the pans have a ridged exterior designed to help with even heat transfer.

You can use the Connect on traditional stoves and direct heat sources, which covers the sort of cooking setups most anglers take fishing. A small camping stove, a suitable gas burner or another compatible direct heat source should suit the job. Just keep the heat sensible. There’s no prize for turning your breakfast into charcoal.

There is one important catch, mind. This model isn’t suitable for induction hobs. That won’t bother most people using it as fishing cookware, but it matters if you’re hoping to use it in a home kitchen with an induction plate. Check your stove before you buy, mate.

The pan size is compact, so it’s best thought of as personal or two-person cookware rather than a family frying pan. You’re not going to feed a whole syndicate with one load. For one angler, or a pair sharing a swim, though, the mix of toastie maker and twin frying pans is genuinely dead handy.

The included heat-resistant utensils are a nice touch, too. They save you remembering extra cooking tools and help you keep metal implements away from the non-stick coating. Add in the pouch, detachable handles and small footprint, and this becomes a tidy little food system for sessions where decent grub makes all the difference.

Our take

The angle

The clever bit here isn’t just the toasted sandwich function. It’s the detachable hinge and removable handles, which turn one compact cooker into two small pans that are easier to use for bacon, eggs, sausages, burgers or a quick stir-fry.

That makes it much more useful than a one-trick toastie maker. You can cook one thing in one pan while warming something else in the other, or use the pans separately when the meal demands it. Less faff, more grub.

What you’re buying

More than a toastie maker

The Connect Sandwich Toaster uses two lightweight aluminium pans that lock together for toasted sandwiches, then separate through the detachable hinge system. Used apart, they work as two flat-bottomed frying pans. That gives you a lot more scope than a standard hinged sandwich press.

The granite-style PFOA-free non-stick coating is aimed at easy cooking and easier clean-up. The ridged exterior helps spread heat across the pan, while the removable magnetic handles make the unit shorter and tidier when packed away.

Worth knowing. The complete kit weighs around 670g with handles and utensils. Each pan is approximately 275g, making the separated setup easy to handle, but the cooking area remains compact rather than family-sized.

On the bank

Ideal for quick, hot grub

This is bob on for the angler who wants more than boil-in-the-bag meals. Toasties are the obvious starting point, but the two pans open up eggs, bacon, sausages, burgers, warmed leftovers and quick stir-fries. Use one pan for the main event and one for the sides.

It’s especially useful on short overnighters and mobile sessions where every bit of kit needs to earn its keep. The pouch protects the cooker in transit, while the removable handles help it slot into a compact cooking bag without loads of wasted space.

Worth knowing. Keep the heat controlled and avoid metal utensils if you want the non-stick coating to stay in good nick. Give the pans time to cool before packing them away, too.

The useful bits

A few straight answers

Can you use it on direct heat? Yes. It’s suitable for traditional stoves and direct heat sources. That makes it a natural fit for fishing cookware, provided your burner is stable and the heat is managed sensibly.

Can it go on induction? No. The Connect Sandwich Toaster isn’t suitable for induction hobs, so it won’t replace an induction-compatible frying pan at home.

Worth knowing. The included utensils and protective pouch make the package more complete. You can get cooking without adding a separate tool set, and the pouch helps keep the pans and detachable bits together.

On paper

Pros & cons

What we like

  • Properly versatile: toasties, eggs, bacon, burgers and quick one-pan meals are all on the menu.
  • Light and compact for a tackle box, carryall or van kitchen.
  • Non-stick coating should make cooking and cleaning far less of a faff.
  • Separate pans and removable handles give you more flexibility than a standard sandwich toaster.
  • Utensils and protective pouch are included, so there’s less extra kit to remember.

Worth knowing

  • Not suitable for induction hobs, so check your cooking setup before buying.
  • The compact pans won’t suit feeding a big group or cooking oversized portions.
  • Small detachable parts, including the handles and hinge, are easy to misplace if you’re a bit slapdash with packing.
