Who it suits
Is it right for you?
Great for
- Solo carp anglers doing proper overnight sessions. There’s enough room for a bedchair, tackle and a bit of living space without feeling boxed in.
- Anglers fishing through changeable UK weather. The high waterproof rating, skull cap, solid front and heavy-duty groundsheet make it a reassuring shelter when the forecast turns grubby.
Maybe skip if
- Mobile anglers hopping between short day-session swims. The full kit is fairly weighty and the long packed length can be a pain when you’re moving light.
- Anyone restricted to tiny, tight swims. The roomy footprint needs a decent patch of bank, especially once you allow space for pegs, rods and access.

Quick verdict
Verdict
The Escape FQ1 is a proper one-man carp bivvy for anglers who want space, weather protection and a more complete package than a bare-bones shelter. The 20,000 mm HydroX fabric, aluminium frame and PVC groundsheet give it a serious, reassuring feel for UK conditions.
It’s not the smallest or lightest option for quick overnighters, and the 143 cm packed length needs thinking about before you chuck it in the motor. But for a solo angler doing proper nights, especially when the weather looks a bit moody, it’s a cracking all-rounder.

The HydroX fabric, aluminium frame, PVC groundsheet and heavy-duty T-pegs make this feel like a serious shelter package.
The roomy layout, skull cap, storm poles and flexible front options should perform well across a wide range of sessions.
It won’t catch the fish for you, but a comfortable, weatherproof base helps you stay focused through long bite-time waits.
The complete package keeps the faff down, although the size and full-kit weight make moving swims less effortless.
You get a substantial list of useful extras rather than just a bare shelter, making the package strong value for committed solo anglers.

The full rundown
Everything you'll want to know about the RidgeMonkey Escape FQ1 Bivvy
The RidgeMonkey Escape FQ1 is aimed squarely at the solo carp angler who likes a bit of room around them. Not silly mansion levels of room, obviously, but enough to get a bedchair, kit and your backside in without feeling like you’re zipped inside a crisp packet. For proper nights on the bank, that matters.
It’s a one-man bivvy with a roomy footprint and a decent amount of head height. The external dimensions come in at 250 × 195 × 144 cm, while the internal space is 245 × 190 × 140 cm. That gives you a practical solo setup, with enough space to sit up, sort a rig or get changed when the weather’s doing one.
The big talking point is the 150D HydroX outer fabric. It carries a 20,000 mm hydrostatic head, which is the sort of figure you want to see on a shelter intended for the full British weather circus. Rain hammering down, drizzle blowing sideways or a proper overnight downpour — this is built to keep the nastiness outside where it belongs.
You also get a HydroX skull cap in the package. That’s dead handy rather than just a fancy extra, as it adds another layer over the roof and helps with keeping the interior more settled when the weather turns rough. It can also make the bivvy feel a bit more comfortable through hot spells, with UPF50 UV protection built into the fabric.
Underfoot, the heavy-duty PVC groundsheet gives the FQ1 a proper base. It helps keep damp, mud and crawling bank-side horrors away from your kit, while making the whole shelter easier to live in. You can chuck a bedchair in, organise the tackle and avoid that annoying battle with wet ground every time you reach for a brew.
The front setup is nicely flexible too. There’s a removable insect-mesh front panel for warmer sessions, when you want airflow without inviting every buzzer in the county to join you. Then there’s a front door panel for colder or wetter conditions. That lets you tune the bivvy to the session instead of accepting whatever one fixed front gives you.
The frame is aluminium, and the package includes two adjustable storm poles covering 120–200 cm. Those are useful when the wind gets up or you want to brace the front properly. Stainless steel 8-inch heavy-duty T-pegs are included as well, so you’re not immediately rummaging through the garage for something less bendy when the bank’s a bit stubborn.
There is, naturally, a trade-off for all that kit. The bivvy itself weighs 7.5 kg, but the full kit reaches 15 kg. Add a bedchair, sleeping bag, rods, bucket and enough grub for a couple of nights and you’ve got a proper barrow load. It’s manageable, but this isn’t a minimalist shelter for sprinting round the lake.
The packed dimensions are 143 cm long by 24 cm in diameter. That long bag will fit in most sensible fishing setups, but it’s worth checking your car boot and storage space before buying. Once on the bank, the FQ1 makes most sense when you’ve got a settled swim and want comfort, protection and less faff. For that job, it looks bob on.

Our take
The angle
This is less about being the absolute lightest shelter on the market and more about making solo carp sessions comfortable, protected and refreshingly low-faff.
You get a generous one-man footprint, a HydroX skull cap, storm poles, mesh and solid front options, plus a heavy-duty groundsheet. That makes the FQ1 a flexible base for everything from spring blanks to grim winter bite-times.
What you’re buying
A roomy solo shelter with the useful bits already in the bag
The Escape FQ1 is a proper one-man carp bivvy rather than a stripped-back emergency shelter. Its 250 × 195 cm external footprint gives you a generous working area, while the 144 cm external height makes sitting up and moving around less of a chore. That’s especially welcome on longer sessions when your swim becomes home for the night.
The 150D HydroX fabric is rated to a 20,000 mm hydrostatic head and has UPF50 UV protection. Add the supplied HydroX skull cap and you’ve got a setup designed to cope with wet, bright and generally changeable conditions. The heavy-duty PVC groundsheet, aluminium frame and stainless steel T-pegs round out the serious, ready-to-fish package.
The removable insect-mesh front panel and separate front door panel give you options. Open things up for air in summer, or shut the front down when the temperature drops and the rain starts rattling. The two adjustable 120–200 cm storm poles and tension strap help keep everything tidy and supported.
Worth knowing. The full kit weighs 15 kg and packs to 143 cm long by 24 cm diameter. That’s the price of having the skull cap, frame, groundsheet, poles and pegs all together. Check your boot space and barrow setup before you commit.
Pick your shelter wisely
Best for settled sessions, not ultra-light dashes
This is a strong match for the angler who gets on a lake, finds a spot and settles in. There’s room for your bedchair, sleeping bag, tackle and the inevitable pile of bits that somehow appears beside every bivvy. It’ll suit spring through winter, particularly when you want more confidence in the forecast rather than crossing your fingers.
The FQ1 also makes sense for anglers who hate buying a shelter and then immediately adding half a dozen extras. You get the skull cap, storm poles, tension strap, front options, groundsheet, pegs and carry bag. That keeps the shopping list shorter and means you can get on with clipping up and finding the spot.
It’s less convincing for roving anglers, stalking work or tight little swims where every centimetre matters. At 15 kg as a full kit and 143 cm packed, it’s not exactly a quick-draw shelter. If you’re constantly moving to chase fish, a smaller and lighter option may leave you less knackered.
Bank-side answers
The stuff you’ll want to know before buying
Can it handle grim UK weather? The 20,000 mm HydroX rating gives the outer plenty of weather-focused credentials, while the skull cap adds extra roof coverage. Pitch it properly, use the storm poles when needed and keep the front setup suited to the conditions. No bivvy beats a bad pitch, mind.
Is it genuinely roomy for one? Yes, the internal dimensions of 245 × 190 × 140 cm give you useful space for a solo bedchair and kit. It’s still a one-man shelter, so don’t expect room for a spare bedchair or a full tackle shop, but you shouldn’t feel needlessly cramped.
Is the weight a deal-breaker? That depends on your fishing. The 7.5 kg bivvy-only figure is reasonable, but the complete 15 kg package is a different proposition. If you’re barrowing to a chosen swim, it’s a fair trade for the included kit. If you’re carrying everything over a long walk, you’ll feel it.
On paper
Pros & cons
What we like
- Proper weather protection from the 20,000 mm HydroX shell and supplied skull cap.
- Roomy one-man layout with useful height for sitting up, sorting rigs and escaping a downpour.
- Flexible front setup, with removable insect mesh and a solid door panel.
- Good package of frame, poles, pegs, groundsheet and carry bag, so there’s less extra kit to buy.
Worth knowing
- The 143 cm packed length is a bit of a lump compared with more compact shelters.
- At 15 kg for the full kit, it’s not the choice for anglers who want a featherweight roving setup.
- A generous footprint can make tight swims and awkward pegs more of a faff.
