Who it suits

Is it right for you?

Great for

  • Perch and zander lure anglers. The light body, smooth retrieve setup and useful spool capacity suit mobile fishing with jigs, soft plastics, plugs and spinners.
  • General pike anglers using medium tackle. The drag, aluminium spool and 3000-size platform give you plenty of versatility without making the outfit feel like a lump.

Maybe skip if

  • Ultra-light finesse specialists. A smaller reel may balance tiny rods and micro lures more neatly.
  • Anglers throwing very large pike baits. For oversized swimbaits, heavy jerkbaits or relentless big-lure work, a larger reel and heavier build may be the better shout.

Quick verdict

Verdict

The SG6 3000 FD is a smart, capable predator reel with a strong feature set. It’s light enough for chucking lures all day, while the sealed carbon drag and braid-ready spool give it the confidence for pike, perch and zander work.

It’s not a tiny finesse reel or a brute-force saltwater machine, but for general lure fishing it looks bang on. The spare spool is a proper bonus, especially if you want braid on one and lighter nylon or fluoro on the other.

The full rundown

Everything you'll want to know about the Savage Gear SG6 3000 FD Reel

If you’re after one spinning reel to cover a fair chunk of predator fishing, the Savage Gear SG6 3000 FD looks like a proper contender. It’s a 3000-size front-drag reel aimed squarely at lure anglers, with enough capacity for normal UK predator work and a weight that won’t have your wrist moaning by lunchtime.

At 229g, it sits in that useful middle ground. Light enough for walking miles of bank and firing casts all day, but not so tiny that it feels out of place on a medium pike or zander outfit. That matters when you’re covering water, hopping jigs, twitching plugs and stopping every few yards to work a new bit of marginal cover.

The 5.2:1 gear ratio gives you a 75cm line retrieve per turn. That’s a nicely usable pace. You can pick up slack quickly after a cast, keep contact with a moving lure and still slow things down when a perch wants a more measured presentation. It isn’t an out-and-out speed machine, but it’s versatile rather than fussy.

The reel carries a maximum drag of 12.5kg, which is serious headroom for a 3000-size predator reel. You won’t need anything close to that for most perch, and sensible pike fishing is about controlled pressure rather than simply winding the drag into a brick wall. Still, the extra capacity is handy when a fish turns for a snag or tries to bury itself in weed.

Savage Gear has fitted a sealed carbon drag system, which is the sort of feature you want when the weather turns a bit grim. Predator fishing is rarely all blue skies and tidy platforms. There’s spray, rain, damp gloves, grit and the occasional reel dunking when a fish kicks off beside the mat. Keeping the drag protected is a reassuring touch.

Inside, the SG6 uses eight plus one stainless-steel ball bearings. That sounds like a lot on paper, but the important bit for you is a smooth, predictable feel when you’re winding and working a lure. The carbon reinforced composite body and rotor also help keep the overall package light, without going down the featherweight, flimsy route.

The spool is aluminium and braid-ready, with 150m of 0.23mm line capacity. That gives plenty of room for typical lure fishing, whether you’re loading braid for long casts and direct contact or setting up a second line option. The spare aluminium spool is a dead handy extra, too. One setup can be ready for lighter work while the other is clipped up for pike.

The screw-in diecast/CNC aluminium handle should give the reel a positive connection when a fish digs in. Its TPE soft-touch knob is a small but welcome detail, especially during a long wandering session. The T-shaped line clip and cone-shaped bail holder are practical touches aimed at keeping the whole casting routine simple, with less faff between swims.

There are a couple of limits to keep in mind. This is still a 3000-size reel, not a heavy-duty big-bait winch, so don’t expect it to love huge jerkbaits or endless oversized swimbaits. For normal perch, zander and medium pike lure work, though, the specification looks bob on. It’s a capable, flexible bit of kit rather than a one-trick pony.

Our take

The angle

This is all about practical predator fishing: a 3000-size body, 75cm retrieve and a decent 12.5kg maximum drag. That makes it a versatile match for medium lure rods, from casting soft plastics and spinners for perch to working larger pike lures.

The big selling point is balance. At 229g, it shouldn’t make a modern lure outfit feel clumsy, but it still brings useful capacity and enough drag authority for proper fish. It’s a reel aimed at anglers who want one dependable setup rather than a dainty specialist for one job.

What you’re buying

A light reel with serious versatility

The SG6 3000 FD combines a 229g body with a 5.2:1 ratio and 75cm retrieve. That’s a useful mix for mobile predator fishing, where you’re casting, winding, stopping and moving again all session. The carbon reinforced composite body and rotor keep the outfit lively without stripping away useful strength.

The sealed carbon drag, 8+1 stainless-steel bearings and aluminium spool give it a well-rounded feature set. The screw-in aluminium handle and soft-touch TPE knob should also make repeated winding more comfortable when the rods are off and a fish is heading for the reeds.

Worth knowing. The spare aluminium spool is one of the SG6’s most useful extras. Keep braid on one and a different line choice on the other, so changing tactics doesn’t mean stripping and respooling beside the van.

On the bank

A strong match for mobile lure fishing

Perch anglers will appreciate the light feel and sensible retrieve, particularly when covering canals, rivers and reservoirs with small plugs, spinners or soft plastics. It’s not a dedicated micro-finesse reel, but it offers more all-round range than a tiny specialist setup.

For pike and zander, it makes sense on a medium outfit throwing ordinary-sized lures. The capacity is useful, the drag has plenty of reserve and the braid-ready spool keeps the setup straightforward. Add a proper bite-proof trace for pike — no shortcuts there, mate.

Worth knowing. Match the reel to the rod and lure range rather than chasing the biggest drag number. A balanced outfit casts better, works lures more naturally and is much nicer to carry around when you’re searching a swim.

Quick answers

The bits anglers usually want to know

The SG6 3000 FD is best viewed as a general predator reel. It covers a broad spread of perch, zander and medium pike lure fishing, rather than being designed for ultra-light finesse or extreme big-bait work.

Its 150m capacity with 0.23mm line is ample for normal UK lure fishing. The spare spool adds flexibility, while the sealed carbon drag gives useful protection in wet conditions. Keep the reel rinsed and wiped down after gritty or dirty sessions and it should stay happier for longer.

Worth knowing. Use the T-shaped line clip sensibly when you’re clipped up for repeat casts. Check your leader, trace and knots regularly too — a quality reel can’t rescue a tired connection when a proper lump piles on the pressure.

Your questions answered

What anglers want to know

The stuff you’d ask your mate on the next peg. Straight answers, no waffle.

01

Is the Savage Gear SG6 3000 FD suitable for pike?

Yes, for medium lure work it’s a sensible option. Pair it with the right pike rod, braid and bite-proof trace system. Don’t rely on the reel alone for safe pike fishing — your wire or hard trace and unhooking kit matter just as much.

02

Can you use braid on the SG6 3000 FD?

Yes. The aluminium spool is braid-ready, and the 150m capacity figure is given with 0.23mm line. Fill it neatly, use suitable backing if needed, and make sure the line is laid evenly before you start launching lures.

03

What does the spare spool add?

It lets you keep two line setups ready to go. Braid on one spool and a different braid, nylon or fluoro setup on the other can save a fair bit of faff when conditions or target species change.
